Ancient Christian Study Group

The history of ancient Christianity is an endlessly fascinating topic. Don Fox and Steve Thoreson are facilitating this meet up to review the history of Rome, religions of the Roman empire, Gnosticism, Mystery cults, history of Christian persecutions, biographies of major Christians, the history of the Bible and many other related topics. If you ever wanted to sort out Eusebius from Clement, or Constantine from Diocletian, or the Vulgate from the Septuagint, then this group is for you.

Previous biblical knowledge is not required to participate.

We will be meeting every third Sunday.  Each meeting a specific topic will be covered.  Check the comment section to find out what the current readings and topics of discussion are.

Hi, my apologies for arriving late today. In the way of background, I'm a scientist, and I should clarify that, while I was agnostic in my late teens and early 20s, I've been a Nestorian for 24 years (long story). I joined this group because Ancient Christianity has been a favorite research area for many years, I'm a staunch proponent of separation of church and state, and terminally skeptical. As Theodore Sturgeon said, "Ninety percent of everything is crap." I agree, but it's that other 10% that intrigues me, because it exists.

The topic this month is "Christianity's Competitors". Please do a little quick internet research on one of them. Not sure where to start? Try one of these: Atargatis, Zalmoxis, Hermes Trismegistus, Isis and Osiris/Serapis, Mithras, Dionysus, Astarte and Adonis, Romulus, Sol Invictus. There are lots of others.
