Book Club: Attack of the Theocrats (& 2013 planning)

NOTE: We'll be choosing our books for 2013! Please join us! You'll find the list of suggested options here.

We'll be discussing Attack of the Theocrats by Sean Faircloth (nonfiction - culture):

While much of the public debate in the United States over church-state issues has focused on the construction of nativity scenes in town squares and the addition of "under God" to the Pledge, Faircloth, who served ten years in the Maine legislature and is now Director of Strategy & Policy for the U.S. Richard Dawkins Foundation, moves beyond the symbolism to explore the many ways federal and state legal codes privilege religion in law.

Available on Amazon.

Come with a few thoughts/ideas about the book to discuss!

About the Venue

The Coffee Garden is a little coffee shop just off Broadway and 99. We're probably in the separate room off to the left when you come in the front door. If the weather's nice, we may be in the garden through the back door.

They serve all sorts of coffees and drinks, sodas, and a wide variety of sandwiches and salads perfect for dinner if you choose. They appreciate it if you at least buy a drink/pastry.

Please be courteous and do not bring outside food or drinks.

Ok, so in compiling the calendar, I've hit a problem with "Leaving the Fold." It's pretty expensive on Amazon, will take 1-3 weeks to ship, and isn't at the library...I'm going to switch out for Judy's "Sex & God" suggestion unless anybody has any complaints. Thanks all.

We did already strike the second Genome book. We can talk about during January meeting if you want. I'll still set up calendar but we can switch one of the later ones.

Good idea, thanks. I think I'll order the Sex & God book now and read it. Just professional research for the group, of course. (That line right there is an example of how we have to pretend nobody really likes sex. Get thee behind me, church guilt.)

This just in: I just now received an eSkeptic email newsletter talking about a new book called "Sex & God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality" [Paperback] by Darrel Ray ED.D. The blurb includes: "You will be surprised at how much religion has influenced your sexuality, who you marry, the pleasure you get or don't get from sex, and what you can do about it." Can I talk everyone into substituting this book for one we voted in tonight? I'd sort of be interested in this sex focus, from hatred of gays to sin of masturbation to guilt to control... Maybe since we're reading Dawkins' book on evolution, perhaps strike the genetics book? Any takers?

I don't usually go to the book club, but this was a book I definitely wanted to discuss. I'm glad I went. It was also nice being a part of the planning for 2013. My only complaint is that we were outside, where others tend to smoke.

Freedom, it's a short book, and can be cherry-picked by chapter title. Mainly read the last part about his plan for the future.

Ooo! Ooo! I met Sean Faircloth, author of this month's book, and my copy was left at home! Alas, no signature. btw, he had to go around introducing himself last night. Dawkins, on the other hand, had to avoid direct contact to prevent mass convergence. Sort of diminished Mr. Faircloth, sorry to say. Great event! Subscribe to the AOF newsletter at aofonline.org to read my write-up next month.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
