The Religion Roundtable is a monthly meetup meant to serve as an open forum for the discussion of the incredibly diverse topics of God(s), Religion, and Unbelief. We view these topics as a window into the human condition and an endlessly fascinating discussion topic.
The Roundtable seeks to generate heat if not light on a host of important matters, while allowing people to speak their minds freely and enjoy a lively discussion among friends.
While sponsored by SacFAN, the Roundtable is open to participants of both the theistic and non-theistic persuasions, with both sides free to express their positions.
While specific topics will be outlined for each meeting (some topics may span multiple meetings), the conversation is meant to be informal and free to follow any vibrant train of thought. Selected topics will include (but are not limited to):
- The Conflict Between Religion and Science
- Why People Believe/Don't Believe in God(s)
- Creationism/Intelligent Design vs Evolution
- Secular Morality - Good Without God
- Free Will
- "Reason is Larger Than Atheism"
- The Place of Religion in a Modern Society
- Pseudoscience and Skepticism
- Discussions of Humanism
- An Evolutionary Perspective on the Origins of Religions
...and hopefully other topics if interest is shown.
While no expert on a specific topic is likely to be present at a Roundtable event, we will certainly get a feel for the prevailing notions and perhaps even have the good fortune of agreeing to disagree. Either way, the discussions should be entertaining and fun so long as each speaker respects the other members of the group.
The events are currently planned be held at The Coffee Garden (side room) in Sacramento on the second Thursday of each month, at 7pm, but may vary based on availability (check before showing up). Outside food and drinks aren't permitted, but they have a great menu so order something on your way in.
