Buck the Folsom Rodeo!

Let's go out for a quick demonstration against the Folsom rodeo. I've only got a couple stacks of pamphlets and some posters that say buck the rodeo but it's better than nothing and these animals deserve a voice, even for just an hour. Bring your own poster if you'd like.

Modern rodeos are nothing more than western-themed circuses with contestants wearing John Wayne costumes and racing against the clock in a cruel spectacle for cash prizes all to sell sugar water, alcohol, and automobiles to the fans. And it's the animals who pay the price, from being electrically prodded to make horses and bulls appear wild to the countless injuries animals suffer from contestants who only care about beating the clock and winning cash before moving on to the next rodeo in the next city.

Anyone with a heart knows it's wrong to clothesline a baby animal, body slam it to the ground, tie its legs so it can’t move, and drag it by the neck. If this were done to a puppy or kitten, the offender would understandably be charged with a crime, and likely be jailed. In rodeos, however, it's called calf roping, and supporters claim it’s a sport. But the abuse of baby cows is just one of rodeo’s cruelties. Thanks, to everyone who participated! I think it was a good demo and many took a leaflet. Some of the usual illogical responses though, like "The animals are treated better than humans." Really???

We thought it was great. We had a van with a "STOP Rodeo Cruelty" message w two calf images being cruelly roped (thanks to SHARK and a graphic designer who "pulled" out the images). Reactions were + and -, but two young women drove over to ask us about it. We gave them handouts. It was super meeting you folks afterwards. Let's coordinate for the next one and work on banners and posters.

The main entrance seems to be Natomas St and Stafford intersection (Stafford was blocked off.) That would be the best as far as exposure goes. We had planned to park the van at the corner of Natomas and Coloma (about 2-3 blocks west of that intersection). Natomas St is a traffic jam, so it's worked out well. I'll plan to start out there. If they make us move the van, or if that spot is taken, we'd go further west--toward Riley St. I'll see if I can find some poles--if we have to remove the banner from the van and hand hold it, that might be an option.

We went out tonight with a banner attached to my old van (Stop Rodeo Cruelty with two calf images from SHARK). We'll plan to go again on Saturday. Gates open at 6, but it's best to get there around 5:30. By 7 pm, it's done; only a few stragglers going in. Because of the large size of the van, I plan to park near/at the intersection of Natomas and Coloma, but it's at least a couple of blocks or more from the main rodeo intersection. Normally, on Saturday (and maybe Friday), they block off a lot of streets. Tonight we had a great spot in a church parking lot (even further away--on Natomas), but traffic was at a crawl, so they had to see the message/calf-roped images as they crept by.
If anyone has American Flags they can wave, and maybe a "God Bless" sign, that might be good.

Marilyn, since there will at least be a few of us out there, maybe we could hold up your banner by the entrance. I only have buck the rodeo posters and they are all the same.

The problem is that the sign is large: 8' long x 2.5' wide, and currently, it's taped to the van. It could be held up, but it might be a bit awkward--it's not "stiff," so would take two hands on each end holding it fairly taut. (Maybe I could put it on two "poles," but will be gone most of the day tomorrow before we leave for Folsom.I have a couple of hand-made signs I can bring. If one of us stays with the van, parking it on Natomas, then I could join you with the signs and handouts. bring.

Wonderful, Marilyn! I'm so glad you were out there. We will try to get there a little early on saturday and I'm glad you have handouts.

By the way, steer wrestling is a sham; it was created in a "Wild West" show of some kind, but it's not heritage or tradition--never done in legitimate ranching; nor was "timed" calf roping, or making horses buck (spurs, strap, wire poking, shocking, etc.) in order to "break" them to ride. But, even if it was, it's time to outlaw that bogus tradition as societies have done so many others (slavery, women's vote, etc.).
I have handouts as well, but no one comes up to us in the van....
