GREETINGS, ALL -  SOME ABUSED PIGS AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE FAIR (July 12-28) CONTINUE TO NEED YOUR HELP -

SEE TWO ATTACHMENTS.

Nearly 20 major animal protection organizations have recently submitted letters to the State Fair Board, asking that they drop the brutal "farrowing crates," and instead adopt a more humane display, such as the one at the 2012 Alameda County Fair, with a sow and her piglets in a 10' x 20' pen, in deep wood-shavings, the piglets (born off-site) free to come and go at will through a slatted partition across one corner of the pen, drawn by the warmth of a heat lamp:  Happy Pigs, Happy Public.  (The State Fair's new CEO, Rick Pickering, was CEO at the 2012 Alameda Co. Fair, which did NOT allow farrowing crates.)

Compare the above display with the State Fair's, where pregnant sows are confined in steel-barred crates barely larger than their bodies, unable to turn around, barely able to move, FOR THREE STRAIGHT WEEKS, forced to give birth on a metal grid, before gawking crowds, accompanied by nightly fireworks.  A true "CRIME AGAINST NATURE."  Do this to a dog, go to jail  Under more normal conditions, an expectant sow would seek out a quiet, secluded place and build a nest for herself and young.  EVERY veterinary study I've seen recommends against transporting pregnant animals about to give birth.  The UC Davis Veterinary School (which oversees the Fair's animal nursery) should practice what it preaches.

The afore-mentioned organizations include California State Humane Association; Animal Legal Defense Fund; Sacramento SPCA; Sacramento City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem, Jay Schenirer; Humane Society of Silicon Valley; Marin Humane Society; Peninsula Humane Society; Ohlone Humane Society (Fremont); Oakland Eastbay SPCA, Santa Cruz SPCA; Farm Sanctuary; Humane Farming Association; In Defense of Animals; P.E.A.C.E. (Newcastle); Public Interest Coalition; C.A.P.E.; Animal Place;  Paw PAC; Action for Animals; California Registered Veterinary Technicians Association; Dr. Nedim Buyukmihci, professor emeritus, UC Davis, and founder of the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (now part of HSUS as HSVMA).

If you're a member or supporter of the Humane Society of the U.S., with a reported 1.2 MILLION members here in California (Email CA director Jennifer Fearing at [address removed]); the Los Angeles SPCA (info@spcalacom);or the San Francisco SPCA ([address removed]); or other humane organizations, please let them know that we could certainly use their help in this effort.  Please ask your own veterinarian to submit a support letter.

Here's hoping that all these organizations will continue to encourage their membership to email the Fair Board, urging them to adopt the humane changes.  Reportedly, Fair attendance is down 40% in recent years.  I'm betting that Fair attendance would improve if these humane proposals are adopted.

EMAIL - Rick Pickering, CEO, and the Board of Directors, CalEXPO & State Fair  --  [address removed]

The Fair Board meets only once more before the Fair opens, and it could REALLY make a difference if animal advocates could pack the room.  It's worth taking off work for a couple of hours.

STATE FAIR BOARD MEETING:  FRIDAY, MAY 31, 12:30 P.M, IN THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, CalEXPO, 1600 EXPOSITION BLVD., SACRAMENTO, CA  95815.

If you plan to attend, please let me know.  As The Lorax says, "Unless somebody like YOU cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It's not."

Thanks for caring.  Some letters to the editors of your local newspapers would help, too, between now and the Fair's opening day (July 12).

PLEASE FORWARD THIS ALERT TO OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES.

Sincerely,

Eric Mills, coordinator
