Sign and send the petition: Tell the Navy to protect the whales

Please join Daily Kos and the Natural Resources Defense Council as they urge the Secretary of the Navy to protect whales and dolphins from deadly sonar used in naval training exercises.

Navy officials are proceeding with an extensive five-year plan for training in the coastal waters of the mainland U.S and Hawaii which includes the use of high-intensity sonar and explosives that can severely injure and kill marine mammals.

The Navy itself has conceded that its exercises could kill nearly 1,000 marine mammals, cause more than 13,000 serious injuries, and inflict more than three million cases of temporary hearing loss. Many of these injuries will occur in threatened whale populations that are already suffering diminished numbers.

This reckless plan will inflict entirely unnecessary pain and suffering on marine mammals. By putting commonsense safeguards in place the Navy can protect marine mammals without sacrificing military readiness.
