Have fun learning the basics of hand percussion and using rhythm to express yourself in private or public drum circles with friends and community members. We will focus on the skills and listening that will enable you to join in a drum circle or jam with confidence. Participants will be guided in learning:
· basic hand drum techniques
· some common, culturally diverse, rhythms and universal grooves for a variety of hand drums such as conga, djembe, doumbek
· drum circle participation skills, listening and etiquette
· how to include shakers, bells, clavé, and other rhythm instruments into the groove and,
· magically more
Drumming in circle is a way of communicating in rhythms that unify people in creative harmony to celebrate our individuality together beyond words. Community drum circles are fun, healing and inclusive of everyone from beginners on. We will create a safe space for you to find and share your inner rhythms. All of life is a rhythm of one kind or another. You are now officially invited to join in “the groove”.
Bring your own hand drum and any extra drums to share. Please come even if you have no drum and be prepared to unleash your inner rhythm. Extra drums may be on hand to use.
Host: Steve Bash
I enjoy playing many instruments including piano, guitar and a variety of hand percussion from around the world. For many years I participated in weekly drum and music jams with a group of talented and creative friends where I deepened my appreciation for listening, expressing and connecting with others harmoniously through the power of rhythm and circle. I can often be seen making music about town in samba parades, drum circles, various world music and dance ensembles and a variety of community oriented events where interactive rhythm and music formats serve to bring people together in joy and celebration.
