A waterfall dropping right into the ocean! This is an excellent hike along the California Coast Trail starting from the Palomarin trailhead near Bolina. It is incredibly pretty with amazing ocean views.
As you approach the top of Alamere Falls from the spur trail, it becomes a bit tricky to negotiate. You need to carefully scramble down to Alamere Creek, which is a bit steep. Then you must cross Alamere Creek, which may be tricky in high water. At this point a pretty upper cascade is viewed, 3 separate cascades about 30 ft. in total height. From the top of the cliff, you can also get a nice side view of Alamere Falls itself, dropping 40 ft. down onto the beach. To get down to the beach, you must carefully scramble down the cliff.
The close encounters were mainly from people who took an off-trail adventure.
I'm wearing shorts and water shoes so I can get near the water.
The side spur to the falls was nearly overgrown with poison oak when I was there this last summer/fall. I couldn't go down the trail without brushing against the stuff. Maybe the park service has cleaned it out since then. The main coastal trail also is lined by poison oak in areas but it is a wide trail so it's generally not a problem. The main trail is very pretty in itself and well worth the trip, even if you don't go down the side trail to the falls.
I made this hike last year after you guys collected all the poison oak oil and the trail had been widened and cleared so no one had to rub themselves in the poison oak to get to the falls. I was worried after your experience and happy to find trail clearing work had been done prior to our arrival. Just so you know trails have to be cleared every year for us to walk them. If you can bring pruning shears with you on the spring hikes and do your part to help clear the trails.
It would be advisable to have long pants with you in case the poison oak has not been cut back yet. Hiking poles are helpful too to push back any stray plants.
I have to stop and pick up a hiker in Vallejo. Any idea what time you'll be at the trail head so we can meet you? Carol
If anyone is passing through Vacaville on their way to the trailhead, I would love to catch a ride. Just let me know. Thanks! Elizabeth
Hi Kannan, I will pick you up at the Davis park and ride around 9:25am. We'll be leaving 11th and P in Sacramento around 9:15am.
Hi Shannon - any chance you have room for one more or know of someone who has room for one more hiker? I can meet at the Davis park and ride to make things easier....
My guest and myself will meet you at the trailhead if that's okay. Do we still have the same start up point?
A headlamp might be advised due to our late start and added mileage---- darkness may ensue before we get back to the cars!
Elizabeth, I will put it out there when we meet in the morning. Call me about 9am.
Hi Shannon, that's ok, I will try again on a future meet-up. Elizabeth.
I would like to car pool with moderate to fast hikers. Hoping to get back as early as posible. Doing the Golden Gate Bridge Hike tomorrow. Anybody got room? See you in while.
