Assalamu alaikum wa rah matullahi wa barakatuh - May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be with you. You may call me Bishop; I converted to Islam almost two years ago, and as I have been trying to learn more and more about Islam I have also learned there is a precipice between new converts and others in the Islamic community - with both other new converts and those who have spent a large part of their lives as practicing Muslims. I have also learned there is limited knowledge provided to those who are not Muslim regarding the beliefs and practices of Islam, and unfortunately most of the information provided is originating from media broadcasting about the war on terror. It is my hope to connect people so Muslims and non-Muslims alike can get together in a safe, informal, non-threatening setting to learn more about Islam and develop a community of people who can have fun together. I want to disspel stereotypes and pre-conceived notions regarding negative perceptions of Islam; as Muslims, we are not what the media would like you to believe we are. In fact, we are not much different from those of you who are non-Muslim. Many people may be surprised to know Islam shares many similarities with Christianity and Judaism, there are also many beliefs in Islam which reaffirm those of the Christian and Jewish beliefs. There are limited options for non-Muslims and new Muslims alike to learn about Islam, and going straight to the Masjid can be quite intimidating. If you are at all curious about Islam, Muslims, or just want to discuss some of the things you have heard about either topic - through media or otherwise - please join this group. A secondary effect I would like to have is to develop friendships with people so we can do activities together - halal of course. As a convert myself - I used to be Catholic - I have found it difficult to consistently meet and connect with other Muslim people so I figured this would be a good way to meet like-minded people as well as help others who may be curious about Islam to learn more about Muslims beyond the propaganda. This is not going to be a group of lectures, or formal teaching; this is just some people getting together and making friends - Muslims and non-Muslims are all welcome. If you have questions, ask; if you have an idea for a meet-up, suggest it. We are all learning, so even the most seasoned Muslims may be able to get a different perspective of Islam. I hope you will check us out, and I look forward to meeting everyone.
