I am doing a workshop on the basics of portrait lighting and posing.

I need a minimum of 3 students for the class and a maximum of 7. This will allow us to cover a number of different setups and answer any questions. Once we cover the basics we will do some playing around with the lights and setups. I am bringing in a model for us to shoot as well so this should be a fun session.

This workshop is suitable for any level of photographer and you only need to know how to set your camera to manual and focus it in order to attend.

Agenda:

First hour

- Basics of light (direction, quality, quantity, ...)

- Lighting modifiers (umbrellas, beauty dish, soft box. ...)

- Equipment (strobes, triggers, light meter, ...)

Second two hours

- Shooting with several lighting setups for good portraits and tips on posing

Items I will cover in the workshop:

  • Overview of the equipment and setting it up
  • Tips and suggestions for getting the best light possible
  • Triggering and measuring the light accurately for good exposure
  • Basic posing and subject communication

You should attend this workshop if want to:

  • Learn more about using flash
  • Learn how to get great looking portraits
  • Get an opportunity to use some equipment before you invest your money

Equipment I will be using during the workshop:

  • AlienBee lights (AB400, AB800, AB1600, and Einstein)
  • PocketWizards (PWIII)
  • Sekonic flash meter (L-358)
  • Shooting with a tethered workstation into Lightroom

What I will provide:

  • Water and soda
  • All the lighting equipment
  • Set of lighting cards that outline 16 different lighting setups

What you need to provide:

  • Camera that has a hotshoe and can be set to manual

Our model for this workshop will be Quinn:

John - I hope your workshops go well today...I am sure they will. And, so sorry I was not able to attend. I do have a question about model shoots - question follows.

If you offer a class for members to pose and shoot models you bring-in, can we use these photos for publication? Do we need to get model releases signed? I am new to the aspects of studio work and the use of models. Thank you to anyone who can give me further details about how this all works.

Doyle - For my workshops I have the models sign a "Promotional" model release that allows the students to use the images for their online or printed portfolio. For any usage beyond that you would need to negotiate that with the model yourself.
