Snowshoe (Beginner) Hike (1A). Donner Lake or Donner Summit area

  • March 15, 2014 · 8:00 AM

This outing is intended for beginners who have never been on snowshoes or are fairly new to snowshoeing.    We’ll be going to either the Donner Memorial State Park or Donner Summit, depending on snow levels and conditions.   Hike stats: 4-5 miles (approx), elevation gain 250 - 500' (est.).  Hikers must be in reasonably good condition since we'll be at 7,000' and  snowshoeing is hard work.   Bring the “10 essentials,” snowshoes & waterproof boots, water, snacks, lunch, layered clothing due to changeable weather conditions and $$ for carpool drivers.  There is a daily use fee at Donner Memorial State Park.   Sno-Park passes are required at Donner Summit (most likely location) - I will have a few single day Sno-Park passes available for drivers for $5 each.  No minors.  No dogs.  Rain, snow, and/or chain controls cancel.  Hike limited to 15.

I will email the details about the local "rendezvous" spot to those signed-up about a week prior to the hike!

Contact leader for details.  Leader:  Bruce Notareus, [masked] or[masked] (before 9PM).

(Note: Please do not RSVP for this outing if you have disabled your Meet-Up email, in whole or in part.  I need to be able to communicate with RSVPs collectively and individually. If your Meet-Up settings do not allow me to do so, your RSVP will not be accepted.)

Was glad to see some actual snow! Hope everyone, including the three we lost track of, had a good time!

I wasn't sure we'd find much snow but there was enough to snow shoe. Every trip is an adventure and today's hike to above Donner Lake was no exception. I thought the view overlooking Donner Lake was beautiful. The sun was out (and hot), the sky was blue and cloudless, the company was delightful. Bruce did his usual magic and we all returned to our cars safe and sound. Thank you all!

Sorry to cancel but it is not working out this time. By the way, I hope folks know that REI no longer rents snowshoes. Land Park Ski is the only place I know that does. Enjoy!

Due to a lack of snow at lake level (Donner Memorial State Park) we will be relocating this outing to a higher elevation in the Donner Summit area!

Annieciao - As I have told you on your many prior attempts to RSVP for hikes I lead, I will reject your RSVP's until such time as you change your email settings. If you are unwilling to change your Meet-Up email settings as I require, please do not waste your time (and mine) by attempting to RSVP for my outings.

Because the mid-week version of this outing scheduled for March 5th was cancelled due to weather, I have combined the 2 outings and increased the size of the group to accommodate a few of those from the cancelled outing.

Should guests be allowed to come if there are members on the waiting list?

    February 17, 2014

    • Bruce N

Each "Event Host" gets to make that determination for each event that they lead. I limit members to invite one guest for a number or reasons, including, for example, it could be a spouse or significant other who is not a member and it is a great way to interest new persons to the Sierra Club and possibly membership in the Club!

Plus 2 more guest if possible

    February 17, 2014

    • Bruce N

Can only accommodate 1 guest per member. One of the other two "guests" would have to join, sign up and add a "guest."

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
