What: Apple Picking
When: Saturday, October 24, 10 AM to 4 PM
Where: Meet at Naked Lounge at 15th & Q St., downtown Sacramento, carpool from there to Garden Highway Orchard
Why: To donate apples to the Sacramento Food Bank, and practice fermentation and food preservation by making cider.
What to bring: bags for apples, dress for the weather, water, maybe lunch?
There was a lot of interest at the recent Regenerative Design trip on a cider making meetup. This requires fruit. We need volunteers to come pick apples if we want to be able to make cider. We need at least five folks to RSVP yes to make this happen.
According to Randy of Soil Born Farms, there will be others there picking as well. Ladders and equipment for picking will be on site, but if you have gloves, I'd bring 'em. As well as appropriate clothes.
ming, you were responsible for this event yet you were late and unorganized. too bad iwas looking forward to attending
I had a great time! I was excited to meet everyone in the morning and glad we were able to carpool over to minimize cars. I enjoyed meeting the other groups doing good works there and had a lot of fun picking fruit.
In response to jodi beck, I hear you feel I did not meet your expectations for organizing this meetup in a way that worked for you. I apologize for my portion in contributing to your confusion and disappointment. I, in response, feel confused as we met at the Naked Lounge at 1500 Q St., met others, waited till 10:24 then left together as a group, carrying orchard picking equipment. Were you there ? We had fun !
The event was a great success ! We got apples, plums and persimmons gleaned from an orchard that was going to be closed for donation to Harvest Sacramento http://HarvestSacramento.org
, donation to the Sacramento Area Permaculture guild as well as doing some climate education in line with 350.org's day of Climate Action (October 24th, 2009).
The followup event, open to everyone, is going to be at Soil Born Farms on October 31 and is posted here: http://www.meetup.com/Sacramento-Area-Permaculture/calend...![]()

We talked about permaculture principles this event demonstrated:
1) sourcing of local food,
2) preservation of food,
3) catching and storing energy,
4) trying to produce no waste,
5) using small and slow solutions,
6) sharing the excess via donating food to the hungry,

So in answer to Heather's inquiry, the plan is that once this Meetup gets the minimum number, (which I think we have with the addition of those here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=188673510545
) then we will post the Sunday event Meetup, that theoretically already has a space, equipment, and bottles (from the inperson conversations at RDI).
