Only two of us went... plus my two kids. We had a great time. I picked up Robert at his house and we drove to PV and he did his shopping. Then we went up the road and had lunch with some folks in an Intentional Community so I could meet them. Then we found a fabulous swimming hole and spent a few hours there just swimming, jumping off rocks, sliding down the "rapids". Then a lovely ride home. Had a hard time finding an affordable restaurant that met everyone's dietary needs that was affordable. We compromised and just did fast food to get home. It was fun and meeting Robert was a real pleasure!

I'm working this Sat but have a great time! I just stopped by there Wednesday after a Master Gardeners class - love PV.

And to everyone... it'd be super fantastic if you went ahead and deleted any irrelevant or outdated comments so that this thread is cleaned up. I don't know if they'll go ahead and delete it after this and call it done of if it'll linger on but you can delete your comments by hitting the little x in the upper right corner if you hover. :)

Colleen - I'm afraid I'm still waiting on some info from someone who's out of town and cannot be reached. I am planning to come on this trip, if I do not have to drive my son to SF for camp that day. Thus my delayed RSVP for SURE SURE. I will hopefully know tomorrow. I live in West Sac and will gladly pick you up. I would have room in my car for two. I am very interested in going to the river. The goat thing was just something I was thinking I needed to do in the Nevada City area but I'd prefer the river.

I have been to PV a couple of times so I know where it is. Not hard to find. I also need to throw out there that I'm not in a good spot financially so if y'all are going out to lunch that's cool, my family and I will be needing to picnic or stop by a grocery mart to grab food.

Hello All - I'm feeling sort of overwhelmed financially and with too many committments. For me to attend this field trip is going to require I really PUSH HARD to get to the meetup site. As much as I am longing and yearning to attend - my higher, intuitive knowledge tells me I should not attend - stay home, clean my house, save money, re-group and stay centered. To Robert Charland, thank you kindred spirit for taking a leadership position and making the event HAPPEN after years of this being moribund, dormant, dead in the water....so happy to learn that the Peaceful Valley Farm Supply field trip is going to happen and although I am yearning to go, I finally realize I should not FORCE it to happen.

OOps... I hadn't seen this. Okay... thanks!

Robert... my email is [masked]... so we don't have to work out our details in public forum. :) I understand about your babies... including the dog - we have a little one too that would have to come on an overnighter. I have to have someone come over and give the bunnies ice packs in the late morning also. So like I said... it's an impulsive thing that doesn't have to happen... just would be awesome if it could because I am considering moving up there and this would be a great chance to check it out. In the name of sustainability though... it's always best to ride share so we save gas... for ourselves and the planet. :-D So if it's too much, it's okay. I'd still like to please check out this place after PV and before the river. They have somewhere to be on Saturday anyhow. Shoot me an email and we'll exchange phone numbers. Thanks!

Another option is to meet at PV in the morning and then proceed in one car on to further destinations. I will have to think about it because this garden is my main means of support and I hate to be letting anything die that I am responsible for. If it had been a week ago or next weekend it would have been easy for me to do it. Let me know soon if that is your final itinerary.

    July 18, 2013

  • Robert C.

I just wanted to let you know Michelle that I am considering the Friday option. I only have one major concern and that is some new squash transplants that I planted three days ago. While the garden as a whole is on automatic timers to drip irrigation the new transplants need to be babied and I have been watering them individually every morning. it's possible to give them a good watering the evening before and hope for the best but it is supposed to be 100 on Saturday. I also have a very small dog that I could not leave for that long but she could ride on my lap is that would be OK with you.

    July 18, 2013

  • Michelle

I have also just emailed Billabong Kinders - Viola Dawn Leaming
18602 Excelsior Rd, Nevada City, CA 95959
    Phone: (530)[masked]
    Email: [masked]
to ask if a visit/meeting were okay and what times are good... if Saturday is possible. I've done a lot of research on goat breeds and Kinders have a lot of benefits such as they are tropical and will breed any time, not just in the fall like European goats. They're mid sized and have high fat content in their milk for cheese and it's a good taste... not the best but not heavy like many others. Of course the sites talk about teets and disposition and stuff and Kinders just came out on top in so many areas and this gal Viola was spoken highly of by people all over the Western Coast. So it's very fortuitous that she's so close to us. :)

I will let you know if that's an option. If a Friday leave and return Saturday is an option... what's the earliest you could leave on Friday? Colleen... you too if you're able. Thanks!

    July 18, 2013

  • Michelle

I have a Jetta Wagon... so lotsa room in the back. Let me just ask you... and we'll wait to hear from Colleen... because I am a person of my word when I give it and this was plan #1. I just got an email inviting me up on Friday because I had mentioned to that IC that I may be in town. I asked if that meant a sleep over and JUST sent that email... and it's late (I wish I could sleep better... but it's the stress ... thus the NEED to go smell some trees! LOL!)

So I'm not wanting to cause any problems with anyone and I do have TWO tents and they have some yurts and I am not trying to be presumptuous.... but in the spirit of throwing out into the ether what is possible and what is not... could you... would you be up for leaving Friday if I were able to make sleeping arrangements on 50 acres of forest land with a little sustainable community to see how they live... near the Yuba River? If that's just too crazy impulsive I totally understand! Just askin' to feel out the possibilities.

    July 18, 2013

  • Robert C.

Oh and I would be flexible about the goat ranch etc.

    July 17, 2013

  • Robert C.

OK, well it just so happens that I was considering going despite the collapse of the meet-up. I have shade clothe that was back ordered and I was going to pick up 5 gallons of fish hydrolate, and some seeds that I hope will be in stock like chiogga beets. I really need to get out of town too and I planned to go to the Yuba. So Michelle if one of those seat-belts could be for me I would love to go in a full car as long as you have space for a five gallon (sealed) jug. that's cool that you are still stoked for the trip. Let me know. I will of course contribute to cost of petrol. If you hadn't fueled up yet we could go by Costco right near here. they have the cheapest prices without buying from BP.

    July 17, 2013

  • Michelle

Well... I wasn't ready to throw in the towel. So I would still love to go. I got it arranged with the other people and the other plans for Sunday and Monday. So I will have myself and my two kids (16 and 11) and two extra seat belts in my car. I need to get away and I'd love some time with adults too (and a few bucks for gas would be so appreciated!) but either way, I"m headed up. I'm game to go to PV... I will LOVE going to the River to swim and picnic, my daughter has been so many times with her dad she's sure she can find this great swimming hole with a water fall and stuff. If it's just the kids and I we may check out goats or the mine up there and I'm looking to join an Intentional Community and there is one up there that I just wrote to and said I'd be in the area and maybe we could meet somehow. If I have guests, we'll vote on what we do. Let me know. Hugs,
    Michelle

looks like this is a meet-up that just was not meant to happen. One thing for sure is that we put the damn thing out of it's lingering misery. Peaceful Valley is a good place to order from on line. I can't say that I am sad. I'll have to try to plan a trip to the Yuba some other time.

    July 15, 2013

    • colleenwhalen

Yup, I think we should give this field trip the decent burial it deserves.....seemed like a great idea - but it is a FAR away location, which adds to the difficulty to get a group of folks to attend. I'd sure like to go to Yuba and that river you posted about - sounds like oodles of fun!

      July 16, 2013

  • Janet K.

This is actually a "Maybe" but that is not an option. I have my three kids with me and will have to see where we are financially next week before I commit. We probably will bring our own lunch, but if anyone else is bringing kids I'll keep a lookout

    July 14, 2013

  • Robert C.

Michelle, I am not sure who is going on this excursion but sounds so far like MAYBE you Colleen and myself. If you have room in your car for me I'd appreciate it. I would volunteer to drive but I will not drive with just myself in the car. I would drive if you and Colleen would want to ride with me. I do know where the great Yuba River spot is!

    July 14, 2013

  • Ivy G.

Sounds great but I can't make it. Enjoy!

    July 14, 2013

  • Robert C.

I guess the light rail would not go up that far. I live in North Sac really close to the Royal Oaks Light Rail so if folks from Mid-town or south or west would like to make their way here via PT I will drive from here (I can fit four others). My place could be the lower rallying point because I'm also close to the little 80. Meet here, park, and we can pile into my car or yours then head up to the Roseville park and ride. My car will probably be one that goes on to the river after PV so keep that in mind. The meeting time for Roseville is 9:30 AM, so meet here at 9. any takers?

    July 14, 2013

  • colleenwhalen

I sent an email to Roseville transit for advice how to get from Downtown Sacramento to Roseville Park n' Ride. I have no idea if it is "do-able" on public transit on a weekend day. There is a Roseville Transit commuter bus which leaves downtown Sac to Roseville. No idea if it runs on weekends, nor if it will leave Sac early enough to get me to where you folks are meeting.

I will get back to you just as soon as Roseville Transit responds to my inquiry about how to get to where you folks are meeting up.

That being said - is there ANYONE in the Midtown/Downtown area who is going to this event who can offer me a carpool ride round trip to the rendevous spot at Roseville Park and Ride? In all the years I belonged to this group , I never had any luck getting carpool interest. Well, except for lovely Tara Sheen who graciously gave me several rides, to Sol Collective event and workshop at Center for Landbased Learning in Winters - THANK YOU Tara!

    July 13, 2013

    • Robert C.

Colleen wouldn't the light rail go there?

      July 13, 2013

  • Robert C.

Michelle and Melinda it is on the 20th, next Saturday. We are working out the time and meet-up locations. Michelle are you a sure thing? I am going to start getting my fall seeds together because although it's too early to plant it's not to early to start getting seeds.
    Congratulations Melinda!

    July 13, 2013

  • Melinda W.

Got married today, and don't think I'll be able to make it tomorrow morning!

    July 13, 2013

  • Robert C.

To make this a real meet-up people actually have to go. there are thirty signed up but so far. I count three and a maybe. Are the three for sure definite? It's real easy to push around a few ones and zeros but another thing to get it together actually make a commitment and follow through. The idea of meet-up is great, the reality, well not so good. (just my observation)

    July 12, 2013

    • Robert C.

Anyway Colleen, I would still go if we could get even a small group together. I would even drive if I had to. Yes if I'm going to drive all that way I'd like to make most of a day of it. I love the Yuba River, and to be so close it seems like a waste not to go there on a hot summer day. I have a back-order from PV that is supposed to be there on the nineteenth so I could arrange to pick it up on the 20th. Also they are supposed to have their chiogga beets in stock by the 17th so I could pick up a bunch of seeds and save the shipping. It could be worth it, but I wouldn't go just for that. So that's where I stand on it. Let me know your thoughts.

      July 12, 2013

    • colleenwhalen

Robert - I agree wholeheartedly - picking the date CANNOT be a democracy by consensus with everyone voting for what date and time works for them. Then it is analysis by paralysis and everybody has schedule conflicts. My management and leadership style is just to SET THE DATE - and tell folks when the event will happen. Either they attend - or they don't. Case closed. I've done community organizing since 1968 and worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. professionally for 10 years doing political community work. People will drive a sane person to drink dithering around when and when not they can attend an event. If we have 3-4 people splitting gas - that's probably enough to make fuel expense affordable as long as the driver gets good mileage on freeways. What time do you want to rendevous? I suggest we meet at a RT Lite Rail station at a pre-appointed time. The meetup time needs to be SHARP - no dilly-dallying for stragglers, yes?

      July 12, 2013

  • Jill

Would have loved to have gone, but will be out of town. Have fun!

    July 12, 2013

  • Jodell B.

I would offer to drive but my air conditioner has a leak, do not get great mpg, and only could take 3 at most. But... I buy my shallots from PV. If someone wants to pick them up for me, I could give a few dollars for someone else's gas to go.

    July 12, 2013

  • Robert C.

As for the carpooling; we could give it a few days and see who else would want to go but so far we have Michelle who lives in WS but may have a car full already, but that’s good she can caravan. Colleen is near Oak Park, I’m in North Sac near Bus. 80 and Mariana is in Roseville near 80. So we could do a park and ride thing and meet up near freeway exits along the way. Someone just needs to volunteer to do the driving. Let’s figure out the details as we get closer to the 20th. I guess if Michelle is driving her own loaded car it’s OK if she is a maybe. but if we are going to do this and you will be a part of the carpool you should be sure you want to go.

    July 10, 2013

    • colleenwhalen

No biggie, but I live Downtown/Midtown - not Oak Park. Sounds like a great plan for us all to meet up at central site to rendevous - then all drive up together - sounds like oodles of FUN!!!! Plus I'd love to go to the mountains and beat the heat - it's a lot cooler in Grass Valley - if we get another triple digit heat wave, hotter than the hinges of hell in Hades - I'm gonna melt in a puddle like a Hershey bar left out in the sun...

      July 11, 2013

  • Robert C.

I'm looking back again and I see Michelle's desire to stop at a goat farm too and I could go for that as well. Woopey! I like goats, I'll bring a sketch pad.

    July 10, 2013

    • colleenwhalen

Whoopey me too - I love goats (although they do stink a lot) Did you know you can get RAW unpasturized, grass fed goats milk and cheese at Central Farmers Market, downtown at 5th & W streets Sundays - 8 am to 12 noon? North Valley Farm in Cottonwood makes the finest raw goats milk and cheese, I've ever tasted! Yum-O!

      1 · July 11, 2013

    • colleenwhalen

You have to RSVP your order on Wednesday via email to the goat ranch for Sunday pick up. You don't have to pay in advance - just place your order. They keep it all on ice, so they need to precisely know how much merchandise to bring. Sometimes they make special treats - such as cubes of goat cheese marinated in olive oil and herbs in a glass jar - they do that for the holidays. Goat milk season is spring to around late October - then they stop giving milk - until spring.

      July 11, 2013

I went to PV a long time ago and don’t remember too much about it but I can’t imagine making a 100 minute drive just to go to say Green Acres, even an organic Green Acres. So for my time I’d certainly like to add another aspect to this trip. I could be into going just by adding a lunch at an organic cafe’ if someone knows of a good one, but I could happily extend the experience by going to some beautiful nature, swim as an option, but for sure soak up some river beauty. So my best case scenario would be hit PV first, then make a trip to the river and soak that up for a couple of hours, then stop in Nevada City or Grass Valley to have an organic late lunch, ( I’m always hungry after time at the river), then head back to Sacramento. I don’t know any of you but I’m willing to take a chance that we would be a fun group.

Hey Robert - I've had ZERO luck in trying to get carpool rides to many of the permie guild events - like the Rio Linda Grange, which has no weekend bus service. Robert, if you still want to do the carpool and nobody from the guild wants to go, I promise to find you 3 or 4 people who are non-permie guild members that will go with us to Peaceful Valley Farm Supply. I'm a community gardener, participate in Oak Park Crop Swap and know lots of folks who need seeds and like to go out of town on field trips. Grass Valley - Nevada City is very nice place - lots of organic cafes and fun stuff to do...So don't give up - 'cos there ARE possiblities to make this happen. I was sorry that the last time someone tried to organize the field trip there was not enough interest.

    July 10, 2013

  • Robert C.

This is a continuation because I am over 1000 characters.
I would still be interested in going with a car full just to meet some of my fellows from this group. As a permaculture gesture we could stack our functions and get in another side attraction. This is probably a bit much for you guys but just a little way up the hill from Grass Valley is the Yuba River which offers some beautiful views and some sweet swimming. We could pack some snacks to share, have a picnic and swim, after visiting Peaceful Valley in the morning. I see that there are thirty people who SAY they are interested in PV but we could just cut to the chase and get at least one car full and just go for it.
    Just a thought.
    How about Saturday the 20th?

I've just taken a look back in time and see that this meet-up was originally proposed in 2011. Somehow I have the feeling it might not really happen. I love Mariana's comment/question of "do we have a man in the house to lead us" Mariana, doesn't look like it!
I usually order from peaceful valley on-line and since the time this trip was proposed I have placed and received several orders. Right now I'm waiting for some shade cloth from them that is back-ordered. For me it's worth paying for shipping to keep from burning the gas with one person in the car and taking the time out.

As of 9/10 some garlic is now in stock at PV - both hardneck (georgian fire, bogatyr, music, metechi, and purple glazer) and softneck (CA early white, CA late white). More varieties due later. They also have a combo pack mix of 5 different varieties. For you that have chickens, they also have a chicken forage blend for $2.99 /lb with one pound covering about 500 sq. ft. See the online catalog at: www.groworganic.com

I might sneak in a quick trip tomorrow (Sat Sept. 10) as I need to finally buy Gaia's Garden and pick up some seeds, chicken forage, etc. But as it's not that far for me, I'll gladly go again anytime - will never turn down a trip to PV and/or GV. If I go tomorrow, I'll check and see when the garlic might be available.

    September 9, 2011

I buy from them when possible also. I went out to get my fall crops and ground cover/chicken and bunny food (LOL!) When I went the garlic wasn't in yet and I'd love to make a trip out SOON to get my garlic. Anyone else into fall planting? Onions, garlic, leeks, lettuces, chard, mustard and other greens are all needing to get seedlings going NOW. Contact me if you're headed up or would like to ride/gas share with me. Thanks!

Peaceful Valley is a good outfit. I get about 80% of my seeds and supplies from them each year by going to their Grass Valley retail location. Worth a trip.
