To share vegetarian and vegan meals, make new friends, learn about veg-friendly restaurants, learn about ways to increase vegetarian and vegan restaurant options, reinforce our desire to live our lives in a way that reduces consumption of the planet's resources, and supports the environment, humane treatment of animals, and good health.
Be a community of people with similar dietary interests, share information, in general be a supportive community. Be an organization we can work through to help encourage sustainable use of the planet. Both of our families in Illinois/Wisconsin think a meatless diet is odd, so being part of SVS helps us remember our dietary choices are normal.
Both civil engineers, love dogs, bicycling for transportation, growing organic vegetables. Tom took up woodworking after retirement from being a bridge engineer. Maggie's job involves making roads safer and easier to bicycle and walk for transportation.
Vegetarian, with rare exceptions. Tom had a "widow maker" heart attack from a blood clot in 2008 even though he exercised and ate what's considered a "heart healthy" diet - whole grains, no red or processed meat or cheese, almost no fried foods, low fat diet, incl. vegan meat substitutes, beans - and was slim. His genes did him in. Cardiac program suggested "reversal" diet which is basically low fat vegetarian. That's where we are now, though a few times a year, mostly while on trips, we have salmon. Full disclosure: Maggie still succumbs to extremely rare cravings for chicken. Old, lifelong habits die hard. We only stopped eating fish and chicken on a regular basis less than three years ago, so it's still a work in progress.
