Monthly Meeting

Our speaker topic is "Why Can’t I Figure out the Tide" with Jim McCully!

Anyone who has ever navigated the St Johns River has asked themselves “How can the tide always be against me?” While we probably can’t answer that age old question, we can help you understand what impacts the tides.

Have you ever wondered:

Why do we have two tides when we only have one moon?

Why does the West Coast of Florida only have one tide and the East Coast have two?

Why is there virtually no tide in the Mediterranean?

Why doesn’t the tide table match what is happening on the St. Johns River?

Jim is the author of one of the most definitive texts on the tides in the world. It is used by professors and students around the world to help them understand what influences the tides. It is used by the Naval Academy midshipmen and is found in over 300 college libraries.

More importantly, as the title states, it is a common sense guide and Jim is able to take a difficult subject with a lot of math and make it seem simple (if anyone wants to get into the math – that is what the break in the program is for!). Jim is also a Mayport native and avid fly fisherman and is able apply this new knowledge to our local boating area.

Little more about Jim - Third generation Floridian—born in Jacksonville—B. A. at The University of Florida—M.D. degree at Duke University—Trained in Diagnostic Radiology at The Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn—practiced hospital-based diagnostic radiology for 30 years In Brunswick, Georgia, and on Amelia Island in 2001.

Cocktail hour/happy hour begins at 6:30pm. Meeting begins at 7:30 pm.
