2 or 3 day campout - Explore the Upper McKenzie river area

  • August 9, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Limberlost Campground

A one or optional two night tent/car camp at Limberlost Campground -August 9-11th. Day trips Saturday and Sunday to various options around the upper Mckenzie River and McKenzie Pass area. The campground is 3 miles east of McKenzie Bridge on hwy 242.
This will be a plan-as-we- go weekend with the trips decided on the night before around the campfire. There are many options within easy driving distance of the campground – from cool shady creekside trails to high mountain lakes, lava flows, spectacular waterfalls and snow capped peaks. The Mckenzie River trail is a great mountain bike trail if you’re into that. If you’ve never explored this unique area of the Oregon cascades this is your chance.

Depending on turnout we can have a couple options each day - weather and motivation dependent. I will have some trail info and trips loosely planned but I haven’t been on many in the area so it will be a group exploration and decision. Some may want to do a long ambitious hike while others may choose two short trips or spend a day swimming – then meet back at camp share stories.

Everyone will be responsible for their own sleeping arrangements, food, WATER and - BYOB of choice- with a Saturday night potluck part of the deal. There is a $12 fee per campsite with $6 charge for an additional vehicle. I’m pretty sure we can fit at least 3-4 small tents on each site so it would end up being about $4-5 a night- depending on cars, etc.

Limberlost campground is 120 miles from Salem via hwy 22, 20 and 126

95 miles from Corvallis via hwy 34, 20, and 126

56 miles from Eugene via 126

There is a small grocery store 3 miles from the campground. There is NO RUNNING WATER AT THIS CAMPGROUND. I will be leaving early on Friday (4pm) from the Sweet Home area - and can snag as many camp spots as needed. I will be bringing firewood for two nights. I will have a gas 2 burner stove for community use.

There may be an option for showing up Saturday or Sunday morning and joining a hike as long as you’re on time and reasonably early – but you’ll have to go with whatever was decided on the night before! This will need to be discussed on the forum here. Please be prepared to exhibit courteous campground behavior and share transportation cost with those willing to drive.

We can talk carpool options on the discussion board as always.

This was an excellent outing. Everyone's personalities merged together so well. Good food, good fun and the best car camping trip with members who are now what I consider casual friends. I'm glad I went. Thanks everybody, I have a great memory to take to Colorado.

Thanks David - great attitudes and contributions from everyone made it so fun. The weather was exciting and made for welcome evening campfires. Can wait to see some photos from your lens. I think this is my first five star review for an outing - first time meeting a couple new members - they were so fun - I hope you two come back.

I'm still planning on coming, but it looks like I won't make it until Saturday. An update, I was upriver today and stopped by at the campground to see what it looked like. I noticed big 'reserved' signs in front of many of the camping spots. I ran into a forest service ranger and asked about the reservations. He said they opened these sites up to the online reservation system earlier this year. Unfortunately the fs website wasn't updated. I couldn't tell if there were any spots still open or not. Do we have a plan B if all the sites are taken? I''m also wondering how to find you as I probably won't get there until after you've left for a morning hike. Any thoughts on how to find you? I don't think there's any phone reception out there.

    August 8, 2013

    • Dave Z

look for a black toyota - thats the camp spot anyway - hard to know where we'll be if we're gone. I dont imagine we'll leave camp until 8:30 or so

      August 8, 2013

    • Dave Z

Barbara - we will leave a note on the bulletin board at the campground if a plan B is needed

      August 9, 2013

  • Robert

Based on the weather forecast, I'm gonna bail out. Call me a sissy, but I do not enjoy camping in the wet.

    August 9, 2013

    • Kari

and i have a mother-load of chicken and steak kebobs!

      August 9, 2013

    • Dave Z

well with t-storms its 50-50 everywhere whether we get wet or not. I will bring a big tarp to drink under. Maybe we'll just get a light show and no rain

      August 9, 2013

  • David

    Dave
A quick search this morning showed that only 3 site are on the reservation system at Limberlost Campground. The other 9 sites are first come basis.

    August 9, 2013

  • Dave Z

With what could be 9 tents - I will grab enough sites to accomodate that. Polly and Karen and plus 1 - you will be there both nights?

OK ... I'm down for plates and forks, beers, sausages and some veggies.

      August 7, 2013

  • Robert

Soooo ... are we meeting at the campground? Or somewhere else and driving up together?

    August 5, 2013

    • Dave Z

Yes! time to start carpool discussion - I'll be leaving sweet home around 4-5 on Friday. I have a passenger already. I would hope people would consider ridesharing to avoid congestion and the extra vehicle fees.

      August 6, 2013

    • Robert

Sooo.... just meeting up at the campground then?

      August 7, 2013

  • Polly

I will bring ingredients for s'mores and also munchie food stuffs, such as, naam bread, hummus, triscuits and some other dip.

    August 7, 2013

  • Dave Z

I will reserve as many sites as I think we'll need on Friday - if I know someone is coming Saturday I will grab one for them if I can. This campground is traditionally less crowded than most - but it could be busy. Theres only 14 sites I think. sites are $12 each, there is a $6 charge for each additional (more than 1) vehicle per site.

If you cant make it please update your RSVP!

    August 6, 2013

  • Kristi D.

Stuff to make s'mores for me

    July 29, 2013

Can you feel the love Katrina? You must go now..I have extra gear if you need some..

      July 31, 2013

    • Barbara

I was looking at a map and many of the campsites border Lost Creek. We should have water - just not potable water.

      August 5, 2013

  • Karen F.

Maybe. Sprained hand. But seeking other car/tent camping buddies.

    August 5, 2013

  • Kari

    Shall we talk potluck?

    August 4, 2013

  • Robert

Also... I have a big monster 8-10 person dome tent if that were preferred by some instead of several smaller ones. I know some are not comfortable sharing tent space, but just throwing it out there.

I'm gonna try to make this. I will know for sure by next Monday if I can pull it off.
