Cheat Creek Trail to Triangulation Peak

  • September 21, 2013 · 7:30 AM

This one requires a shuttle between Forest Road 2233 (McCoy Creek Road) and FR 2243 (Whitewater Road) which are both just past Idanha. My preference is to start on the Cheat Creek trail. There is a cool meadow on the Cheat Creek trail, a fun ridge to traverse to get over to Triangulation, a good view of the cave from below, then the view from the top of Triangulation and a short spur to take from there to go down to the cave. From there, it's out to the Triangulation trailhead and parking area and shuttling folks to FR 2243 to pick up the other vehicles. I think linking these trails results in about 8-10 miles total distance, but I really don't know for sure. This is moderate difficulty as far as elevation gain, but the ridge trail to work west to Triangulation is a bit tricky. This also might require a bit of route finding on the far side of the cheat creek meadow. I always seem to have to search around a bit to pick the trail back up again. Bug spray, food and plenty of water all necessary. Also suggest long pants since the ridge trail between Cheat Creek and Triangulation does not get a lot of use and can be pretty brushy. I suggest an earlier meetup time since this is a longer trail and requires the shuttle.

I'm also open to changing the date to sometime in September though I will be on another trip out of state August 24th through September 9th.  9-14, 9-21, 9-28, and 10-5 are some other dates that would work well for me.  I'm all for picking the date that will allow those most interested to make it.

fun trip with the squall waiting until we summited. Very good hike on a less used approach to the peak - thanks for the suggestion and trip robert - oh and busting through the wet brush both ways! Everyones attitude on this whole weekend was just fantastic.

No worries ... the pants dried out relatively quickly around the fire that evening, so all was well. :)

I'll be driving a small sedan that's not great on forest service roads. Will there be opportunity to hop in with someone else who is doing this as a day hike? Also, I'm not terribly familiar with Salem (driving up from Eugene) - I won't have trouble finding the Winco but where about in the parking lot will people be meeting? Looking forward to it...thank you!

Thank you, Robert. I'll get there early as well.

Robert, as best as I can tell, I would be the only one on this hike to go as a dayhike and I'm not comfortable hiking out alone from a trail that I've never been on and when the weather/visibility may not be so great. I'm afraid that at the last minute I need to pull out of this one. I hope you get this message (considering I mentioned yesterday that I would get there early and that now I won't be getting there at all).

We have another option instead of the end of day/return shuttle that we can discuss at Winco tomorrow morning. It would be for those that are not doing the overnighter to simply hike out to their carpool/vehicles at the Triangulation trailhead and those of use doing the overnighter to simply reverse ourselves and return the way we came. It would add a couple miles but probably result in close to the same time.

I like the idea of an option to simplify things - see you in the morning Robert - with the weather I suppose there are a few things that are "game time" decisions

Unfortunately, I'm still suffering from this cold. I was hoping I would get better before the hike :(. I'll have to withdraw from the event, I don't think I'll be able to do it and I wouldn't want any of you to get sick.

robert - i was thinking of an overnight into jeff park after this hike - starting at the end of the 2243 rd (whitewater trail) - do you have a feeling for how late this trip would go? - would there be time to get a mile or so up the whitewater trail after all the shuttling?

I've been in to Jeff Park only twice ... but never from the Cheat Creek Trail. However, I know where they meet up on top of the ridge after you climb out of Cheat Creek Meadow.

Is this group more Intermediate or Advanced? I am looking for light hikes/walks.......

Don't worry ... this is not one of those brutal ones ... this one is on the high side of moderate.

Oh, okay Robert. Thanks! I will keep my eyes open for "entry-level" hikes :)

Hi All. I'm verifying that the plan is to do this as a day hike? It seems people are asking questions about over-nighting, which sounds awesome :-) but I am only able to attend this particular hike if it's an out-n-back in one day. Thanks!

Laura, this is a day hike. There is an option to stay over to hike into Jeff Park the following day. Some are just coming for the day and others will do both.

Great! Thanks, Kari! I wish I could spend the night, especially in Jefferson Park :-)

Not at all. With the camp out being this month, I'll go ahead and change the date for this one. 8-17 is a little short notice.

9-21 gives me a weekend off to recover after I return from Utah. How's that work?
