Spotted Owl trail and / or Devil's Peak

This is an afternoon hike. It has been moved to Sunday because the weather looks much better in the mountains then, and I am being forced to work on Saturday too. Meet us in the parking area just north of French Press Cafe on South Commercial, or join us inside before 1pm for coffee or espresso.

Here is a link to the weather for the area (NOAA still working :-)

We will be hiking the scenic Spotted Owl Loop trail, part of the South Breitenbush Gorge Trail, (Hike listed in most Oregon Hiking guides including William Sullivan's Central Cascades book) and this is a great hike for the fall. It is a 4.5 mile loop, but we can lengthen that if folks need more of a workout, by hiking part way up nearby Devils Peak, or just doing a side trail off the loop. The Spotted Owl Trail wanders through much old growth, and crosses the river 2 or 3 times on footbridges. There should be good fall color on the hike. Starting point for the hike is about 10 minutes past Detroit.

This hike will be more of the relaxed / social pace variety, and the weather forecast is good. If it changes to look wet and cold I would take that into consideration and postpone, but right now the second half of the week looks really good.

After hike options include pizza & beer at Giovanni's in Mill City, or possibly a hot springs soak. I will take into consideration what folks feel like doing. Being that the hike time frame is about 2 - 5 pm, dinner afterwards would be very easy.

I will try to respond to any questions you have in a timely manner.

Enjoyed the hike very much. Also the extra distance to Roaring Creek with with Nancy, Tina and Allison was an added special bonus! Very glad I went.

I'm glad you guys still went hiking, but I'm SO sorry we all lost you. A few people were driving 70 mph, and it was difficult to keep up. If there is a next time, we need to be clearer about some points before leaving for a hike.

So sorry Angela. We will make it easier to find the trailhead for those that get separated next time. Though you had one of the photo copied maps, wasn't sure. Glad you guys still got a hike in.

    Curtis,
I would love to bring my dogs. Can they be off leash? If not, could Elaine and I hitch a ride with someone?

Sure, they can be off leash on the trail.

20 + people attending, is this a good turnout or what?
Forgot to say this is an excellent hike for bringing your doggie, i'm going to be bringing my black lab who is super friendly and loves to hike in the woods.

Anybody have a link on driving directions? I'm completely new to Oregon, having trouble finding it on the map, is there a park to drive to which the trail is accessed by?

    October 12, 2013

    • Curtis

There are a couple different trailhead. We will plan carpools tomorrow.

I should be able to make it Sunday. Pizza sounds awesome after. Anyone know how hardcore is this hike? Would running shoes and a hoodie be sufficient? I don't need my grappling hook, warhorn or scimitar right?

    October 11, 2013

    • Curtis

You're welcome to bring all the gear, but I doubt you'll need it. Spotted owl loop is easy, Devils peak moderate but we may not do that section.

See you Sunday! Are we doing anything after?

    October 11, 2013

  • Elaine Kevorkian I.

Do we need anything special for the hike? I'm assuming everyone will bring water, munchies, a compass, etc.?

    October 11, 2013

    • Curtis

No trail pass needed. Just bring the typical stuff you would want to have on a hike.

I am going to change the event to Sunday but same time same place everything else remains the same and the description will show the change as of Friday morning. This is partly due to weather but also a couple of other reasons too, & I look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday.

Has the event been changed to Sunday?

    October 11, 2013

This is my first Meetup! Looking forward to it and I should be able to go either day, just let me know....

    October 10, 2013

  • Angela

I can go hiking either day.

    October 10, 2013

  • Christopher M.

I'd be available by 1 pm, but not by noon on Sunday. I'm happy with rain, and no worries if everyone else needs to go earlier on Sunday.

    October 9, 2013

  • Curtis

Hikers, quick question: right now the forecast calls for a 40% chance of rain on Saturday, but 0% chance on Sunday and warmer Sunday. If we had to move the hike to 12 noon on Sunday would everyone still be able to go? I won't make the call till more like Thursday, but wanted to get the pulse of the group. We already have a good turnout!

Either works for me. FYI... REI's national used gear sale is on Saturday.

I can go Sunday, but it's very cold up that way so not sure about weather. I have no internet at home, so would appreciate a call if there are changes after 5:00 pm Friday. My phone is[masked]
