Moonlight Snowshoe hike to Marilyn Lakes from Gold Lake Snopark

I did this hike several years ago with the Eugene group and it remains my all time favorite Meetup I have ever been to. Awesome!

Gold Lake Snopark is located 67 miles East of Eugene on Hwy 58 or about a half mile from Willamette Pass on the Right. Moonrise will be about 9pm that night and I think it would be good if we got to the snopark about 8:30 pm that would allows us maximum illumination for the hike. When I did this several years ago, we did not need our headlamps, but please bring one anyway.

The hike is fairly level to Marilyn Lakes about 1.6 miles and Gold Lake warming shelter is another half mile after stopping at Marilyn lakes to enjoy the view. Then we return back to the car for a round trip of 4 miles with 100 feet of elevation gain.

Please plan on wearing warm non-cotton clothing. Please bring several layers so that you can adjust your clothing as necessary. If the weather looks to be utterly miserable, I will likely cancel this trip as I have never enjoyed hiking in strong winds. If it looks to be just merely raining here in the Valley, I would consider that to be still a go for this hike.

Yes, you can brings dogs on this trail. Snowshoes can be rented from REI or several other places. A snopark pass will be required for vehicles parking at Gold lake. When we did this hike before we got back to the trailhead about 12:30 am, so be prepared to make sleeping arrangements for yourself. I was thinking of getting a hotel room in Oakridge or Eugene. I was thinking we could meet at the Brewer's Union for dinner before setting out for the hike. As the name implies, Brewer's Union has beer but they also have great food. I suggest that we begin organizing for carpooling and possible hotel room sharing prior to January 25. Please do not leave the planning for this hike until the last minute.

Please make financial contributions to the drivers Oakridge to Gold lake is about 26 miles. I am also asking for a $1 donation for the website fees.

I just have to reiterate what everyone else has been saying...wonderful group of people, excellent meetup and huge thank you to Carla for organizing it! Btw Carl, eight of us hiked out via Marilyn Lakes loop, working diligently to leave a perfect trail for you...sorry to hear pesky snow obliterated our efforts. Very happy to see that you made it back safe and sound. It was a joy meeting everyone; thanks, and hope to see you all again.

The Day After Yesterday Report: First, a great outing... thank you Carla! Nice to meet all of you, except Nancy, and nice to see you again!

It snowed most of the night, perhaps 2", enough to obliterate all your tracks. Lisa, I hope you found your headlamp, I looked around for it but it may not show until Spring.

Found out why the durn fire was so difficult... the split wood was really green. With some effort I got a fire going this morning, then split a bunch more wood and kindling for the next visitors. This batch is bone dry so it should burn like a tobacco barn.

Had a visitor this morning, a Steller's Jay kept begging for food. I tossed him a piece of granola bar (yeah, I know, don't feed the critters) then put a half cashew next to me and he came right over. I suspect this is routine for him.

I hiked out via the Marilyn Lakes loop, what fantastic scenery! Well worth it. Couldn't tell if you guys went that way, if you did your tracks were gone.

    Enjoyed!

Carla, this was what I found online about this trek. Do you know why they rate it "more difficult"? Just curious.

Curtis your friendly weatherman here. Forecast for the snowshoe location: http://forecast.weather.gov/Map...
Is anyone bringing their dog? I was thinking of bringing my black lab. And is anyone interested in soaking in McCredie Hot Springs (10 miles east of Oakridge right off hwy 58) after the snowshoe?

For those who are interested in something to do earlier in the day before the hike, the Willamette Valley Outdoors meetup group is having a Winter Festival at Salt Creek Snopark (just a ways down the road from Gold Lake Snopark). You can see their writeup about it here http://www.meetup.com/Willamett... You might want to stop by and meet some more outdoorsy folks!

That event looks fun! Would we go right from there to our event,(very close by) or down to Oakridge, then back up the hill?

    • Kari

Nope just me.. Unless someone last minute needs one..

      January 24, 2013

forecast looks like a snowy night, maybe there'll be a peek at the moon through the clouds, or maybe just headlamps on snowflakes - good with me either way....

    1 · January 23, 2013

  • Carl

I might consider this, but would want to combine it with a day of skiing @ Willamette. Anyone else interested in skiing? I'm intermediate, green & blue, no black. Also I'm game for snow camping if anyone else is, otherwise I'll drive back.

    January 20, 2013

  • Mike W.

I want to go but can't afford the room right now. I will be coming from Salem if anyone is planning on coming back that night. Another option....camp out. Hopefully I can say yes by Wednesday.
