Mirror Lake - Beginner or Experienced - Float or Wade

Hi Fly Casters,

We have had several requests for a Sunday Meet-up so now is your chance!   The lower Provo river on weekends is solid tubers and rafters these days and not conducive to fly fishing and the middle is crowded with fishermen! Ken and I fished Mirror Lake several weeks back and found the fishing excellent!  Ken fished streamers with great success and I fished dry flies and streamers and had luck with both.

There are a number of you who are new to fly fishing and have been looking for an opportunity to improve your casting and perhaps get some coaching.  This is the perfect opportunity for the newbies in the group.  There are excellent wading opportunities at Mirror Lake and some places with adequate room for back casting.  Other positions are great for roll casting and I am happy to help you learn that technique if you do not already know it.  Get a 30-40' cast out there and you will be rewarded.  The water is not ice cold right now, so wading in shorts and Tevas will work fine.

For the newbies, my plan is to help you with fly selection, casting and presentation and get you catching fish!  For the more experienced crew, if you have a float tube, Mirror Lake is perfect!

Let's meet at the park and ride and carpool up!

tight lines,

-mark

Hello again folks...I'm headed to Flaming Gorge area with some people from my office in September. Does anyone have any suggestions on areas for us to car camp?

Dude, I looked that up on google maps and I'd go but you'd have to carry all my gear and find a socially acceptable way to keep me warm that night.

Haha I'm not carryin that pontoon of yours no way no hoe

I don't think you can take dogs as it is in the watershed area. Ken I was going to head up there sometime around 3 or 4. I'm going to stay the night up there and then hike back down late sat morning, depending on how the fishing is going. There's lake Mary and lake Catherine, and my plan is to go to Catherine as it is a tad higher and farther and perhaps less crowded.

Not sure how to make a new meetup BUT nonetheless I am headed up to fish the lakes around Brighton Friday afternoon evening and Saturday morning. It is a 1-2 mile hike. Anyone is welcome to join me!

I want to go! Can you take dogs?

      August 15, 2013

  • Ken R.

Had a blast. I hope we can do something like it soon.

Any interest in a fly tying evening?

    August 4, 2013

    • Michelle A.

I would love to learn some fly tying!

      August 6, 2013

    • Mark

I'm always up for some tying and hopefully a bit of coaching. Terrible now but want to improve!

It was lovely up there. It was nice to meet everyone and to learn a little about casting.

  • Ken R.

Great time, beautiful place. What more could you ask for?

    August 4, 2013

  • Jim H.

I'm sure that I need more experience fishing small lakes. It was a beautiful day and well worth the trip up to the lake. Met some great people and hope to do it again soon - maybe Ken can save some fish for the rest of us, LOL!

  • Mark H.

Sorry to miss this one. But I will be fishing. Hopefully next time. Looks like a great group.

So it's about time to talk about rides and who needs one or has room for a rider.

    August 1, 2013

    • Jim H.

I have a truck and can take 3.

      August 2, 2013

  • Ken R.

Michelle, what equipment do you have and/or are you bringing?

    August 2, 2013

    • Michelle A.

I have everything needed except for a floating device. I am picking up my new reel today! Probably get some flies as well.

      August 2, 2013

  • Michelle A.

I would love to carpool. Should I plan on being at the Park and Ride at 10:00 am and go up with Mark or Ken?

    August 2, 2013

    • Mark

Yes, Michelle, that would be great. We look forward to seeing you then!

      So excited.

In the FWIW department I thought I'd let everyone know to bring a wind breaker or even a rain jacket. It can get cold and can rain without warning up there. Be prepared for down to about 60° if the sun gets behind the clouds.

    August 2, 2013

  • Ken R.

I can take one rider but I will be staying until 6 or even 7 pm if the fishing is good.

    August 2, 2013

  • Mark

I'm planning to drive from the park and ride. I can take 2 riders and will pick up Pam in Kamas

  • Nico D.

Is there any specific part of the lake where I should look for everyone. Does anyone wear anything noticeable or otherwise goofy?

    July 31, 2013

    • Mark

Hi Nico, the carpools will arrive around 11:30 . after we get rigged, we will head left (looking at the lake from the parking lot about 150 yards to a big cove. We will fish there for starters.

      August 1, 2013

  • Ken R.

I will have plenty of flies. $1 each. I normally charge $1.50 so get a few the day of if you want to.

    • Mark

      Justin, do you have gear?

      July 31, 2013

    • Justin

Yes I do, but I have no idea what type of flies I should bring.

      July 31, 2013

  • Pam M.

I'm in Midway so where should I meet you up here or at the lake? Thanks for doing this!!

    July 29, 2013

    • Mark

Pam we can arrange to pick you up in Kamas if that works. Call or text me at[masked] and we can make arrangements

I am somewhat of a stillwater fanatic and would be glad to help out with the coaching.
So come one come all. If you're a fly fisher-person and stillwater has you stumped this is the perfect opportunity to learn a trick or two. Mark is no slouch in the stillwater arena so if he is offering to coach/teach then jump on that chance to learn from a seasoned angler. Did that make him sound old?

    2 · July 29, 2013

    • Mark

Thanks Ken. You out fished me 10 to 1 last time, so I bow down in your presence. Buggers and leeches with proper presentation will bring more strikes but I also plan to experiment some with dries and dry dropper combos. Happy to help anyone new with casting, fly selection, strategy and presentation.

Must have flies... Black Mohair Leech Size 10 or even 8 3X,
Olive crystal bugger, #16 thru 12 pheasant tails. And any of your confidence flies.

    July 30, 2013

  • Nico D.

Are there any must-have flies that I should be sure to have in my box?

    July 30, 2013

  • Nico D.

Awesome! I'm backpacking up in the Naomi Wilderness Thurs-Sun but I will drive straight from the trailhead to the lake and meet you guys there.
I've been fishing some alpine lakes with varying success, but I only have one in so many casts that don't spook a fish. Really looking forward to gaining some wisdom from some seasoned anglers.

Can't wait! Sounds like a fun time and a great opportunity to learn to fish stillwater.
