Burial Rites -- Hannah Kent

A brilliant literary debut, inspired by a true story: the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829.

Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution.

Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her. But as Agnes's death looms, the farmer's wife and their daughters learn there is another side to the sensational story they've heard.

Riveting and rich with lyricism, BURIAL RITES evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others?

I can never figure out where to leave a message like this, but is like to propose a Jodi Picoult novel for March, rather than my initial suggestion. It's called Second Glance and I've heard good reviews about it. I feel that Mister God is just a little too difficult to obtain and it's not on audiobook at all.

I am sick as hell and may need my own burial rites. Regret greatly can't be indifferent to your health care and just bring you all my sinus muck. This book was an A read.

    Hello all,

I was originally looking forward to reading these and attending the meeting, but a close family friend died right before Christmas, and I have found the book too dark and difficult to read now. I hope you never stand that sometimes we can't put our emotions aside to read a particular piece of fiction.

I hope you have an enjoyable discussion, and. Hope to meet with you in the future.

I only had 3 ppl "like" my previous comment regarding the change of address, so just want to make sure the rest of you are aware. Please "like" this comment so I know I don't have to fetch you from Cafe on 1st. Thanks!

I will be have to be late because I have a dog training lesson that ends at 11. I'm super excited to discuss this month's book though and hope I don't miss too much.

I may be late as my day to sign up for Sundance Tix is Saturday. Just finished this truly exceptional book and recommended it to a few others. Can't wait to discuss it.

Please note the change of address. We will meet in the community room, which is in the basement of the leasing office building. You can park in uncovered areas (the covered parking is designated for residents). My number is[masked] if you have any questions. If you could kindly respond that you have seen this message, that would be great. I would hate for someone to be waiting around at Cafe on 1st. Thanks and see you soon!

Hello! I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. Our last meeting was so fun. Looking forward to seeing you all again. Also, thanks to those of you who pitched in financially...we had enough in the piggy bank to pay for a month of dues.

Two points of business for our next meeting:

    1) do we want to meet at Cafe on 1st or try the community room at my apartment complex?

    2) Does anyone have a copy of Burials Rites that I can borrow?

    Thanks!

    Jenny

Lets try your community room, it seems to be closer to other people in the club and it might end up being more comfortable. If you are still looking for a copy, I have one on my kindle and can lend it to you if we meet somewhere?
