AF Canyon - Timpanookee to South Fork/Deer Creek Loop

  • July 13, 2014 · 9:30 AM

I've noticed that SLCMTB hasn't done a AF Canyon ride yet this summer.  This is a meetup that Elias Posted WAY WAY back in 2010 and I'm "borrowing" his description with only a few changes.  It's a good ride with lots of climbing.   I remember this ride fondly because when I did this ride with Elias back in 2010 I crashed big time.  Oh the memories....

Lets hit AF canyon for an awesome loop.  The basis of the ride is outlined below but we may change it up a little depending on the desires of the group. We will start at the Timpanookee campground and ride the Great Western (Timpanookee trail) to Pine Hollow. Up pine hollow to Ridge 157 and then take a breather at a spectacular viewpoint overlooking south fork. We'll continue up 157 until we get to the south fork intersection and then head down towards Deer Creek (which is an awesome downhill section). At the bottom, we'll climb up to the Summit Parking lot and then descend back towards Timpanookee. This is rated an intermediate ride because of the climbing (1200' initially followed by 600' at the end) but there is nothing overly technical on the trails other than certain sections being narrow single track and rocky.!  I would estimate between 2.5 and 3 hours for the loop depending on group speed.

Here is some more specific information that is from the site:

Timpooneke. An excellent riding option is to begin at the Timpooneke campground, ride up the Great Western through Pine Hollow to Ridge 157 (2.6 miles) and turn left. Then you ride the loop: north 1.5 miles to the South Fork trail, right 1.5 miles to the bottom of the canyon, then up 1.75 miles to the top of the Alpine Loop. Now ride the southern part of the Ridge Trail back to the Great Western/Pine Hollow trial, and back to Timpooneke. Your total distance will be 12 miles, with around 2000 vertical feet total climbing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Directions: Take I-15S and get off Exit 284 (Alpine/Highland) Exit. Head East all the way to AF Canyon (Left off exit if heading South on I-15) Quickly after the road heads into the canyon (before the guard shack) there is a large dirt parking area on the right. Meet here at the specified time and consolidate bikes. There is a $6 fee for entering the canyon (good for 3 days). My Cell:[masked]  My Car/Bike: Blue Subaru Forester / Pink Pivot Mach 5.7

For those of you who RSVP'd if you cant make the ride please cancel the RSVP. If you are running late call my cell @ (801 )318-1967. This way group knows who to wait for. See you there!

If you felt like hopping off the hiway in midvale on your way through, I'd take a ride. But if other people up your way need a ride, don't worry about me
