Upper Intermediate/Advanced Ride: Alta to Snowbird Loop

Gang-  Whose up for a big ride in Little Cottonwood Canyon this weekend? Besides me, that is :-)  Here's my plan:  meet at the Park and Ride lot at the mouth of the canyon, drive up to Snowbird's entry 4, park our cars ride the road up to Alta (about 1 mile) and climb up Alta's Albion Basin to the Germania Pass trail which will help us gain access to Snowbird's Mineral Basin.  We will drop into the Basin from Sugarloaf Pass and climb Mineral Basin Road to the top of the Tram.  After a break to take in the views, we will finish the ride by descending Snowbird's new Big Mountain Trail.  This ride will involve strenuous climbing through Alta's resort property, and will require solid bike handling skills for the fast descent down Snowbird's new trail.  We will essentially be climbing 3000'-plus and descending the same amount.  In addition to these big numbers, expect big views and big fun.  Since we should be back to the cars right around lunch time, I plan to back a lunch to enjoy back at the cars.  Please feel free to do the same!

Key points/reminders for the ride:

-Plan to be at the LCC Park and ride shortly before 9am so we can drive up the canyon as close to 9am as possible.  We can plan carpooling in the comments section of the Meetup

-I hope we're on the bikes by about 10am.  I'm estimating the ride will take a solid 3 hrs if not longer, going at a nice steady pace.  As such, anyone signing up for this ride should do a cardio check-the climb up through Alta to Mineral Basin will be Strenuous.  Our starting altitude will be 8100ft, and we will top out at 11,000ft at Hidden Peak (top of Snowbird's Tram) Please be prepared for the demands of this ride.

-If you've never ridden at Alta or Snowbird, bring a camera.  the views are top notch all along the way.

-If RSVPing on this ride please remember the following:  bike, helmet, bike shoes, biking attire, gloves, sunglasses, sunblock, snacks for the ride, and plenty of water (we can re-fill water at the top of the tram)

-Pack a lunch to enjoy back at the cars at the end of the ride.  As I recall, there is a market at Snowbird's base area where you can buy sandwiches, etc if you are on the fence the morning of.

Ok, let's get this party started.  Looking forward to this ride already!

Wow, that was a chunky ride. The climb up through Alta on Germania Pass to the top of Sugarloaf, then the climb up to the start of the Big Mountain Trail after descending into Mineral Basin helped make the downhill feel that much better-lunch seemed to taste better, too :p The LCC finale was the coup de grace-if I had not destroyed my rear derailleur it would have been perfect :-/ Great times overall, I'll post some pics soon...

Anyone looking to join this ride but preferring to sleep in and/or avoid the strenuous climb could buy a tram pass and arrange to meet us at the top of Snowbird for the Big Mountain Trail descent. $19.00 for a 3hr pass, $29.00 for all day. If you have a Snowbird season pass I believe it is $10.00 for the tram.
