This is Class #4 in a series of over 30 classes that I'm going to be teaching this year as part of the Herbology Core Course (see course description below).

Class 4 will be the first (of many) herb walks.

We will be identifying a number of local herbs that have both an ethnobotanical history of medicinal use(s) as well as known modern use(s). Additionally, there will be a review over and some new material regarding the Hill Country and S. Texas ecology. Finally, students will choose the plant they wish to do a study on that will be presented much later in the course. We will go over a thorough set of study guide questions that will help everyone in preparation of their study presentation to the class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Herbology Core Course is a comprehensive introduction to using herbs for healing which will include about 100 contact hours. There will be a lot of focus on local herbs in the San Antonio region (as well as the desert southwest), but this course also covers the full spectrum of general herbology. Terminology, anatomy and physiology, energetics of western herbs, wildcrafting and preparations (tinctures, salves, cough syrups, poultices, infusions), herb walks and medicinal plant identification, modern and ethnobotanical data, home herbal first aid, shopping for herbs, connecting with the plant world and more.

We will be doing some wildcrafting (harvesting) of our own locally. There may be a possible field trip for some herb gathering in the late spring as well.

There is some homework, namely in the form of research and presentation on a local plant.

There are also a couple of exams, written and hands-on. I will give a certificate of completion for this class when you have finished.

I will teach this class (for now) like the core basic course in my primitive living skills classes. You can jump into any class, but you'll need to have attended them all to pass.

We'll be working a lot with plant identification throughout the year, so that you can see the same plants in different seasons.

Each class will be about 3 hours or less, and I'll try and hold them at least 3 Sundays a month, if not every Sunday, so the full cycle will take the better part of a year. If there's enough interest, we can look at holding classes on other days or evenings, at least through the summer. I'm charging $10.00 per class, plus materials fees as appropriate for classes where we will be making preparations to take home for our own medicine cabinets.
