Here's part of the input from Nelson and Pade. They also provided some insight and more contacts to speak with in Sacramento. http://www.delmarnorth.com/aquaponics/California%20Aquaculture%20Fact%20Sheet%20Fred%20Conte.pdf

Michelle, is there any way you could post the legalities and Aquaponic regulations here?

    July 24, 2013

    • Michelle

Yes - I will be publishing a document based on the things I'm bringing to discuss and any questions and follow-up from the group.

Sounds like it is going to be a great meetup, with all the networking you've done Michelle. Thanks for letting the waitlisters in!

Sorry. Won't be able to come as something has come up with grandkids.

    July 24, 2013

We have a few people on the waiting list, but I think I can handle the extra guests with some extra seating. If you are on the waiting list, please consider yourselves invited to the meetup. Please take a moment to update your RSVP if your plans have changed, and I'll see everyone tomorrow at 6pm.

The good news is that I developed contacts with four excellent and expert speakers, all knowledgeable about the regulatory environment in California and enthusiastic about our group.

The bad news? They all live either in Sacramento or further north, and we just couldn't get the logistics to work out for any of them to commit to come down to San Diego for the meeting. We tried, they wanted to, but due to their schedules and the costs of traveling, they all had to apologetically decline. But! There is more good news. In talking with the state Fish and Game people, I learned a lot and want to share it with you. Everyone I talked with wanted to explain the current state of aquaponics regulations to me in all sorts of lovely detail. I expect we'll have more questions for Fish and Game after the discussion, and I am going to document everything that we discuss.

Looking forward to it! I'll have some light snacks and drinks.

Input incoming from the folks at Nelson and Pade. They have been paying attention to the regulatory issues from many jurisdictions.

Made lots of progress on understanding the regulatory environment for what we do. I've made several contacts and we have some work cut out for us in the realm of aquaponics activism. Still working on getting a rock-solid commitment from someone from Game and Fish to come speak to the group.

Would appreciate any notes you can post from the meeting, as I cannot attend.

just need to know if it is the 25th or the 18th...

    July 11, 2013

  • Michelle

Would it be OK to postpone the Aquaponics Regulations meetup from July 18th to July 25th? I'm trying to get a guest speaker from Department of Fish and Game, and the 18th isn't going to work out.

Thank you so much to those that have expressed interested in this subject and support for a meeting - I know it's not usually considered very exciting, but there are some significant rules and regulations that apply to both the hobby and profession of aquaculture and aquaponics. Learning about them, and then communicating them effectively to others, will be very helpful in this fast-growing area of gardening. Education is up to us, and activism as well - but in order to respond to what may or may not be good rules and regulations, the first step is to understand what they are and who they apply to and why they were written in the first place. That's the goal of this particular meetup effort.

Would it be terribly inconvenient if someone could take notes and post them afterward for those of us that can't make it??
