SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2013 Discussion topic: Women in Secularism (Part 2)
The May, 2012, "Women in Secularism" conference was organized by the Center for Inquiry to provide a forum for women to discuss issues that affect women primarily, such as sexism, misogyny, and religious oppression. Some of the women who attended said that they felt a sense of empowerment and solidarity. Other members of the secular community argued that discussions of "women's concerns" have no place in a pro-science, antireligious movement. Of grave concern are the reports by some women of harassment, name-calling, unwanted touching, and other inappropriate behavior at secular events. "Women in Secularism 2" has been scheduled for May, 2013, to continue the discussion and attempt to resolve some of the issues raised in the first conference and it's aftermath.
Using the many articles that were spawned by this event as references, in our February SDARI meeting we will continue a meaningful discussion of the issues and controversies raised by the Women in Secularism Conference.
