This is one of my favorite ski routes during storms, when avalanche danger is high, or when showing new backcountry skiers the ropes. The slopes are relatively mellow, the approach is reasonable, and the views are excellent. I think it would be a nice pre-season training hike, especially for the newbies out there, so we can check out the terrain and get some exercise. We'll meet at the lower station of the Palm Springs Ariel tramway and hike from the upper tram station. Let's try to catch the first tram at 8:00am. No crisis if we get the 2nd one. Its about a 2 hour drive from where I live near SDSU so plan accordingly. If someone is late, we'll wait until the 2nd tram, then we'll probably have to head on. Carpooling is encouraged and can be arranged on the message board.
The hike to the summit of Mt San Jacinto is about 9 miles round trip and 2800' elevation gain, give or take, through pine forest mostly. We can try for Cornell Peak on the way back if we're feeling up for it. We'll watch the weather as the hike gets closer so we'll pack the right gear. I expect it to be an easy hike though on dry ground. Among whatever else you think you need, bring water (2-3 liters), food (lunch+snacks), sunscreen (lips too). I plan on having an apres-hike beverage at the tram station bar and anyone is welcome to join although this is not part of the meetup. ;)
