This meetup is a little different. No special cask, no daily specials, just a few people who want to hang out for a few hours trying some beer. All I want to do is head up to Lightning Brewery with a few friends and try out their new Double Strike Double IPA.
Jim, the owner of Lightning, has been known for two things since he opened his own brewery. He does not make hoppy beers, malt is more his pleasure, AND he does not like big groups in his tasting room due to its size. Well, I've talked him into at least breaking one rule, he is allowing up to 10 people from this group to go to his tasting room. The other rule, no hoppy beer, was broken due to demand. Jim decided it was time to brew a hoppy beer. While the beer is quite hoppy, in true Lightning fashion, it is made very well and, in my opinion, is very drinkable. double IPA's can easily be made for only the Hop Heads out there and not for the general crowd, this one I believe is made for everybody. Here is the official description from Jim:
"We released our Double Strike India Pale Ale at the brewery. My IPA aficionado friends can't believe how much they like it...better than (list your fave IPA here). considering this is THE most expensive beer we have brewed to day I am not surprised. It a big (9%), hoppy (greater than 100 IBUs) bomb of a beer. But clean in that Lightning way." - Jim Crute via FaceBook
Other beers on tap may include the following: (Beer list changes daily)
- ELEMENTAL PILSNER - German Pilsner
- THUNDERWEIZEN ALE - German Hefeweizen
- AMERICAN AMBER ALE - English Extra Special Bitter
- FAIR WEATHER PALE ALE - UK-style IPA
- OLD TEMPESTUOUS ALE - UK Strong Ale
- IONIZER LAGER - Pre-Prohibition style American Lager
- BLACK LIGHTNING PORTER - Baltic Porter
- FULMINATOR LAGER - German Doppelbock
- ELECTROSTATIC ALE - French Farmhouse Ale
Lightning Brewery specializes in malty beers. The most hoppy beer Lightning has on tap prior to the creation of Doble Strike was their American Amber surprisingly enough. Even if you do not think you will like the Double Strike, I ask that you come anyway and try their wide range of beer. Lightning is one of San Diego's finest breweries and I would love to show great support.
Tasters are $1 each or $5 for six tasters. If you find a beer you like, Lightning does also sell bottles, growlers, and merchandise.
