Ghost investigation and sleepover on haunted USS Hornet, April 26, 2013

Come join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience of investigating on one of America's most haunted ships - the USS Hornet in Alameda, CA.  You will get to investigate with the group from 6pm to 3am, and then spend the night on board the ship. You will be sleeping in the sick bay, which is one of the very haunted areas on the ship - I had my own ghost encounter in sick bay the last time I slept there years ago).

Dinner and breakfast will be provided on board as part of the deal. Thanks to our friend Heidi Schave on the Hornet (you remember her as one of the speakers at our Maritime Ghost Conference), our group members will receive a $25 discount off the regular (public) $100 price - so you only pay $75 for the event. You will be responsible for providing your own transportation to the Hornet (drive up or fly into Oakland and take a cab). For those who want to carpool, that coordination can be set up on our message board.

We may also need to pool together funds to pay for insurance for our group (a possible $400 expense split between however many in our group attend).

Contact Heidi Schave directly at the USS Hornet (Phone:[masked])  to make your reservations. See the credit card authorization form in our Files section to have the proper info ready when you call her.  Note that just because you RSVP'd on this page, it doesn't mean anything unless you have made a reservation with Heidi and given her your credit card info.

Don't miss out - the Hornet never disappoints!

It was very fun, and a great experience, I would do it again. It was fun to get a chance to hang out with everyone.

There's nothing like investigating on an aircraft carrier - lots of places to explore, and very spooky areas lend to the atmosphere...

    Yes what Kim said!!! :)

This investigation was amazing. The group we had, Marlene, Cheryl, Dave, David, Rick and Annie were awesome. Didn't listen for evps yet, but lots of personal experiences, flashlight responses, and crazy k2 hits. Most if all learning the History of the ship, and meeting some of the proud men and women who not only served, but volunteer to take care of the USS Hornet was an honor. Looking forward to going back.

I would love to go but I don't have a way to get up there. So the only thing I can think of is to give it to someone that wants to go and has a way to get there.

I'm just curious, but any idea how many people are allowed on the Hornet overnight (any night, not necessarily just this one).

    February 17, 2013

  • Dave

This event is open to the general public (everyone in California and beyond), so it's first-come-first-served until all of the reservable spots are gone. This isn't our event, it's the Hornet's, and you need to deal with them directly. See info above.

    February 17, 2013

  • Katherine L.

I wasn't given an option to pre-pay the $75 when I signed up for the event. But if pre-paying is required to maintain my reservation, my guest and I will gladly pay in advance.

    January 29, 2013

    • Dave

Yes, as long as you both pay and reserve your spots with Heidi.

As of today, everyone who RSVP'd "Yes" on this page has been sent an email with instructions on how to reserve your spot. You will not be on the list as an attendee unless you follow through with those instructions (regardless of your RSVP on this page). I am not organizing the SDGAP members who are going, each person is responsible for their own reservation. By the way, if you don't make it to the event in April, they do the event quarterly, so you can always go to the one in the summer.

I am confirmed and paid through Heidi and will probably be flying into Oakland on Friday morning and leaving Saturday at some point. Let me know if there's anything going on after we leave the ship on Saturday.

  • plotz

I realize many who are scheduled to attend may not show and I asked how it works if they don't show. Dave and Cheryl explained that this is not an OFFICIAL meetup event. It is an ANNOUNCEMENT of an opportunity provided by Heidi Schave of the USS Hornet. The "attending" list does not guarantee your spot. The "waiting" list does not mean you have to wait for others to drop off the list. They are simply "who's interested" lists. To reserve your spot, you must CONTACT HEIDI and PREPAY. She is apparently holding spots specifically for our group (at a discounted rate) for this event only. ONCE THOSE SPOTS HAVE BEEN RESERVED WITH HEIDI, THEY ARE GONE. They do these tours a few times a year. If you can not make it this time, you can make the next in a few months, but at the regular rate. Again, if you want to go, CALL HEIDI AND PREPAY. This will reserve your spot.

    January 30, 2013

    • plotz

I suggest using the message board to confirm your pre-payment and to make transportation arrangements if you need to carpool. Let's not bug Dave and Cheryl about this event. They are simply "attendees" and will update us when they can.

      1 · January 30, 2013

  • Kelly S.

I also will pay the 75 if required now. My guest as previously stated may not. He would be coming from out if state. So someone on the waiting list may get lucky. I am hoping to know soon.

    January 30, 2013

  • David R

I'll pay right away if I can be included. :)

    January 29, 2013

  • Michael B.

    Hello all,

I see a waiting list. Does that mean the 20 going have paid? the $75
Or are we going to come down to the wire and have half the people not show up?

    1 · January 29, 2013

  • plotz

and don't forget to book your tour of ALCATRAZ the same weekend. they get booked early. And tour Winchester Mystery House. And the haunted Toys R Us in Sunnyvale.

The only places I have experienced (i don't get around much) are private residences. The worst place I've experienced is on Harbor Drive in Point Loma. Another home in Carmel Valley was a cough, voice, shadows, etc. For a listed of haunts in SD, try sandiegohaunted.com

those do sound great. Fill me in when you guys get a date. I'll be there if I don't have school.

      January 19, 2013

  • David R

I was hoping I could have gotten on the add list after a new date was added for late April, so I waited myself.

    January 17, 2013

  • Bette

So is there anyone that is going that can meet up with me and ride me up there? Please notify me immediately. thank you, Betty

This would be an amazing investigation! Praying to go!! :O)

    January 16, 2013

I was wondering what type of equipment that I should bring. If I fly than it will have to be light but if I drive my car is small. I have thermal imaging equipment, many IR camera plus dvr etc., emf, tri meter, audio recorder, emf pumps, Maybe, before the trip we can all determine what we are bringing to reduce the amount of luggage.

    January 16, 2013

    • Marlene B.

Hi Kelly. I will only be bringing my trusty digital recorder, K2 meter and REM Pod. I haven't fully determined yet if I am flying or driving either.

      January 16, 2013

  • Marlene B.

    Wahooo Even better!

    January 16, 2013

  • Dave

The date has changed from the 23rd to the Friday the 26th. That should make it easier for those of you to include it in your weekend (rather than going up in the middle of the week).

    January 16, 2013

  • Marlene B.

Right now on Southwest, there are flights into Oakland for $79 each way. Not too bad if you have a car like mine that's a gas hog. And you are looking at least a 7 hour drive, weather permitting.

    January 16, 2013

  • Marlene B.

So we would arrive Tuesday at 6 p.m. and the investigation ends at 3 a.m. or 3 p.m. and leave on the 24th?

    January 15, 2013

    • Bette

Dave, this is Betty I want to know where do we sleep?

      January 15, 2013

    • Bette

and if anyone that is going will give me a ride up there from San Diego, HillCrest? Please! email me. Betty

      January 15, 2013

  • Bette

Okay, so is there anyone I can ride with to the event in Alameda for the USS Hornet? if you can please email me at [masked]!! Thanks, we can talk about this. thank you sincerely, BettyD

    January 15, 2013

  • Bette

    just me

    January 15, 2013

  • Kelly S.

I am not entirely positive that I can bring a guest so it may end up just being me.

    January 15, 2013

Transportation problems so I'm giving up our spaces.
