Lake Hodges Paddle

  • Lake Hodges

Let's meet at Lake Hodges at 9:00 AM, Saturday, 7/27 and paddle for about 2+ hours or so and it will probably be about 5-6 miles.

It's been a few years since I paddled the lake, so I don't have an exact spot to meet up at the lake but as I remember there was a boat dock that shows on the map link just about where the green arrow is. We can probably drop our kayaks off in the dirt there and then move our vehicles to the parking lot.

It costs $2.00 to paddle your own single kayak and $7.00 to paddle your own tandem kayak for the day. They have iron rangers for collecting your money and they only take cash as I remember from past experiences. Parking is free.

I believe they have kayak rentals there as well, but I don't have info about them other than the concession stores phone number,[masked]-2023. It will be up to you guys to arrange for your rental if you need one.

Also, one other item is the Lake Hodges website states that they inspect all boats for Quagga Mussels, so make sure you boat is clean and dry when you arrive or they may not let you launch.

Been off the water for a while. Seems like a easy way to re-connect.

I may have to pull out of Saturday's paddle. I bashed my finger and extensors need to heel and stay straight (definitely opposite from paddling). Unless I can think of some genius adaptation, I don't think I'm going to go. Besides, if I did go, you all would think I was flipping you the bird (it's my middle finger) the whole paddle!

I'm really not flipping you a bird.
I'm galloping away now, leaving you in the dust.

Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone else was looking for some help in paddling on his or her tandem kayak? I am just getting started in my kayak adventures and am looking to get my own kayak. I have been researching the best inexpensive kayak for my dog and I. My dog won't always come with me but I would like that to be an option. I have been thnking about inflatable kayaks to make it easier for me to put in my car. Any ideas on this would be appreciated as well. :)

    • Jacquie

I have paddled with my dog, nothing long. He loves it. I will get him a life jacket soon. There is a "dog" beach in Cbad where locals go to stand up paddle and kayak. Its mellow. Fun for all!

Hey Karen, I just wanted to make sure that you saw my reply for helping you with paddling? My phone number is[masked]-7147. Are you going to get there a little early to unload the kayak? I can meet you early if you would like?

Hi. Looking forward to this event. Anyone want to meet at the Hernandez Hideaway restaurant afterwards. I will look into the hours and post info on this soon.

    2 · July 21, 2013

I can grab a bite to eat afterwards too

Wish I could join for this one. One of my favorite kayaks! It's an easy launch. You do have to drop off and then park. I hope to meet with you all again soon. ENJOY!

The highway for lunch is a great idea it's right next to the lake I'm in.

Darn! Out of town but would love to do this one sometime

    July 21, 2013

  • Lisa

    Hello All,

I also live very close to the lake off Del Dios Hwy. So I can be available on short notice if someone wants a kayak partner. I have a few kayaks that I can share. Unfortuntalty I have a prior commitment for the next couple of Saturday mornings but hope to join you at a later date.

    July 16, 2013

    • Heidi

Hey Lisa, message me if a weekend comes up where you would like to paddle. I'm just a few minutes away, too! Heidi (note there are two of us)

      July 16, 2013

    • Lisa

I sure will. I am busy this weekend but other weekends will work for me. I will let you know.

      July 17, 2013

  • Marie

Anyone need an extra hand in a tandem....? I've kayaked this lake and if the wind's blowing (which it usually is you'll welcome another oar in the water!! Ha! FYI--anyone know of a kayak for sale (inside sit) that I can carry in my CRV???? I live a mile from this lake.

    July 15, 2013

    • Marie

Hi Heidi! I'm assuming you have a rack on top and a light weight kayak....see you Saturday!

      July 16, 2013

    • Heidi

Yakima rack - I tie down front & back & it works beautifully.

      July 16, 2013

  • Anne W.

I have to be out of town that weekend--please go again soon.

    July 16, 2013

    • Greg S.

Hi Anne, sorry you can't make it. If this paddle goes well maybe I'll try and post another Lake Hodges paddle later on in the summer. It seems to be a more popular paddle than I thought it would be.

      2 · July 16, 2013

I have a 15 foot heavy duty tandem inflatable. do you think they will let me on the lake. some lakes are particular and discriminate against inflatables.

    July 15, 2013

    • antonio

yea. think I will be ok. I told marie she can paddle with me if she wants.

      1 · July 15, 2013

    • Marie

Hi Antonio! Thanks for the offer I'll see you there. FYI--I saw two folks preparing their inflatable last week when I was there, so I'm guessing we'll be OK.

I need an address. [masked],[masked] doesn't work for me. Does it cost to park?

    July 9, 2013

    • Lisa

It is on Lake drive in Escondido off of via Rancho parkway. It costs a $2.00 permit fee per single kayak. There is no parking fee. After you enter the parking lot off of lake drive take long drive on left all the way around lake till it ends there you will find the pay station and launch ramp.

      July 10, 2013

    • Greg S.

The address for the lake is 20100 Lake Drive, Escondido, CA 92029. I think this address gets you to the lake entrance and then you will need to continue into the park a ways to get to the boat dock or ramp. On the Lake Hodges website they give the following directions; From Interstate 15, exit Via Rancho Parkway and turn left on E. Via Rancho Parkway, turn left on Lake Drive, and continue to the reservoir entrance. I hope this helps and thanks Lisa for your info as well.

      July 9, 2013

Oh, sorry the 27th doesn't work for you, the next two Saturdays don't work me. Maybe we'll see you on another paddle. Thanks.

    July 9, 2013

  • Anne W.

9:00 would be great-- on the 20th--anyone up for a Wednesday as well? We've never been to hodges, but have been eager to kayak there. Thanks

    July 9, 2013

  • Heidi

If it is paddle-able, I'd be interested.

    July 9, 2013

  • Greg S.

Hey People, thanks for all the great info. I'm leaning toward a Saturday morning launch. Anyone have a morning launch time preference? I like early to beat the afternoon winds, but I'm open to other times as well. Give me your input on Saturday launch time requests.

    1 · July 8, 2013

    • Heidi

I would shoot for 9 or earlier (8 am launch?) Escondido gets hot so we are trying to beat both the scorching hot sun and the high winds.

      1 · July 9, 2013

    • Jim C.

I'm for 8:00 myself. Interesting how many people like these lake paddles, Otay is kind of the same way.

      July 9, 2013

  • Tim

Sounds like fun I have not been there this year

    July 9, 2013

  • Brenda

I would be interested in going to Lake Hodges. It's been years since I was there. But fun to take a picnic lunch and find a place to beach the kayaks and have lunch. Saturdays and Sundays work better for me.

Paddled there 2 weeks ago. As long as it's not really windy it's great. Only open Wed, Sat & Sunday. I'm good for a Wed, but not weekends.

Lake Hodges is a fun place to paddle- not sure about the water depth, but I think it's come back to near normal after several drought years- close to my home too

    July 8, 2013

  • Heidi

This is local for me so I'm interested. Weekends work better for me. I went several times in August last year with no water troubles. It just wouldn't work east of the 15. Launch fee is a couple of bucks.

    July 8, 2013

  • Siggi

the water level is low, but still good for paddling. Access to the Lake is only Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday open.
