SD Bay Sunset/Night Paddle

  • August 2, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Tidelands Park

Let's meet in Coronado Tidelands Park at 7:00 to be on the water by 7:30 sunset is at 7:46, we'll paddle across San Diego Bay to the City side where the Summer Pops should be in full swing with their "Broadway Tonight" show to serenade us along as we paddle to and through Tuna Harbor. Then we'll go over to and around the USS Midway museum which dwarfs us. We'll paddle on to the Maritime Museum past the Star of India and other historic ships and boats. At that point we'll be about half way and can start heading back following the same route with a few changes. To total about 6 miles + or -

A lot of this paddle will take place in the dark, Everyone Must Have a Light which is lit from when we need it until the end of the paddle.

Crossing the Bay at night has risks like being hit by boats that don't see us or being swamped by wake that "sneaks" up on us. Everyone needs to try to stick together especially when crossing, Faster paddlers need to slow down, and slower paddlers must try to keep up.

The route should look a little like this.

Great night ride in SD Bay. Really nice group of people, the music and of course the fireworks was a added plus. Thank you Jim and Greg for organizing this.

Do u have to own a kayak or will there be any extra there to rent?

    August 1, 2013

    • Greg S.

Hi Monique, there are no rentals available at this location, unless someone else offers you to borrow one of theirs. I would reccomend you go to one of the thursday night social paddles at Aqua Adventures. You can rent a kayak for one of those paddles for I beleive $15.00 for a 2 hour paddle.

So, I may or may not be there on friday. I have to wait for the f*n cable guy because apparently Cox doesnt know how to properly connect a cable at the pole.

    1 · July 31, 2013

    • Jim C.

Oh sure blame it on the cable guy...:-P

      July 31, 2013

    • Scott

No, I'm blaming it on the company. I cancelled tv and phone, bought a new modem, worked great for 5 days, the day after I returned the equipment, they shut my internet off too. AFTER I told them I was keeping internet.

I'm really looking forward to this paddle. It should be pretty cool paddling around the Midway and the Maritime Museum ships in the dark, or should I say the downtown city lights, and also the concert going on at the Embarcadero Marina Park. I noticed we will have a 6 foot high tide at 7:30 so getting under the Tuna Harbor docks might be a problem, but we can go around if it's too tight to paddle under them.

No I think if it's too high we'll have to turn back. ;-)

Is it easier to do tidelands or ferry landing that late? Is it parking that you are concerned about? Also, I haven't done night time before. Is a headlamp enough or do you suggest a deck mounted light too?

    2 · July 27, 2013

    • Scott

Headlamp is fine. I don't know how late the ferry runs.

      July 27, 2013

    • Jim C.

Hi Eric good to see you, a headlamp is fine. It is parking that is the issue and there's plenty of it at tidelands.
