***SD Bay Sunset/Night Paddle*** ---------- No Rentals ----------

  • Aug 23, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Tidelands Park

Let's meet in Coronado at the Tidelands Park at 7:00 to be on the water by 7:30 sunset is at 7:24, we'll paddle across San Diego Bay to the City side where the Summer Pops should be in full swing with theirDEBBIE GIBSON AND SAM HARRIS: MUSIC FROM THE ‘80S – DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’ show to serenade us along as we paddle to and through Tuna Harbor. Then we'll go over to and around the USS Midway museum which will dwarf us. We'll paddle on to the Maritime Museum past the Star of India and other historic ships and boats. At that point we'll be about half way and can start heading back following the same route with a few changes. To total about 6 miles + or -

A lot of this paddle will take place in the dark, Everyone Must Have a White Light which is lit from when we need it until the end of the paddle.

Crossing the Bay at night has risks like being hit by boats that don't see us or being swamped by wake that "sneaks" up on us. Everyone needs to try to stick together especially when crossing, Faster paddlers need to slow down, and slower paddlers must try to keep up.

There will be fireworks!

The route should look a little like this.

Hey Jonathan. You missed the two jerks at the end because they waited until all of the MALE kayakers passed and then cast their line at the two of us women at the end of the group. It hit my kayak just under where I was sitting and splashed so hard it soaked my right side and the other woman across from me closest to them. Pretty cowardly to wait until all of you males went by, I guess they figured if they did it to a guy, theyd be in serious jeopardy of being confronted or smacked. Too bad I didnt have my phone or a knife handy, I would have cut the line and called friends in the harbor patrol--I was a lifeguard with them for many years.

I had a good time, was a little concerned going across but enjoyed the moonrise on the quiet water at the end. Didnt enjoy the inconsiderate and dangerous guy on the dock throwing fishing line with weights and hooks at us. He needed an evening in jail or a paddle or two in the right places. Someone could have been injured, not just soaked like we were.

I was ignoring them. Drunk fisherman yelling at kayakers because we were on there turf. An all to common occurance. You can leave them 100 yards and they will still complain. This happened on our way at the pier right by the stage.

Thanks Greg, but I do not want people to follow the their opinions or the boating regs as they find or interpret them, I want people to have a white light on at all times that can be seen from a good distance. Pretty simple.

If people would like to supplement their white light that they have on at all times with colored lights, that's fine. As we have seen over the past few weeks, San Diego Bay is very busy on a Friday night with the Summer Pops and the fireworks and all. I do not want anyone getting hurt. Please respect my request for lighting.

Here is a good article with many links. http://www.kayalu.com/k/recommendation_kayak_light_paddling_at_night_fishing_angling.php

There seems to be a lot of different opinions or confusion about navigational lights for kayaking. I found a recreational boating document spelling it out and here is what it states. "Vessel Under Oars -
A vessel under oars may exhibit the
lights for a sailboat. If it does not, it shall
have ready at hand an electric torch
      (flashlight) or lighted lantern showing
a white light that shall be exhibited in
sufficient time to prevent collision". Below is a link to the recreational boating rules. Check out page 29 for the lighting requirments for vessels under oars. http://www.uscgboatin...

It states in the document that you need to show your light in sufficient time to prevent a collision. Jim wants us to have them on for the entire time we are in the dark, which I agree is a great idea. Some of those boats in the bay can sneak up on you pretty quick.

I am trying to rearrange my schedule to be able to get there on time...that work thing ugh! ...so I am still tentative. I have an 8' SOT that I have used mainly in the bay or on lakes. Will that suffice for this trip? I would say I am a beginner to intermediate kayaker.

A flashlight is fine if it can be on for the whole paddle. Last time I put one in my boat which lit up the whole compartment, but I had a headlight too.

Hey, I found this FAQ info about the fireworks after the Summer Pops concerts. Looks like it will be a fireworks show again..Yaa!

Do all Summer Pops concerts have fireworks after?

All Friday and Saturday night Summer Pops concerts have a fireworks display scheduled at the end. Thursday concerts do not. Nor do Sunday concerts, with the exception of all three Star Spangled Pops and Tchaikovsky Spectacular presentations.
