Lake Hodges Paddle

  • October 12, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Lake Hodges Entrance

Let's meet at Lake Hodges at 9:00 AM, Saturday, 10/12/13 and paddle for about 2+ hours or so and it will probably be about 5-6 miles.

Information: sandiego.gov

It costs $2.00 to paddle your own single kayak and $7.00 to paddle your own tandem kayak for the day. They have iron rangers for collecting your money and they only take cash as I remember from past experiences. Parking is free.

I believe they have kayak rentals there as well, but I don't have info about them other than the concession stores phone number,[masked]-2023. It will be up to you guys to arrange for your rental if you need one.

Also, one other item is the Lake Hodges website states that they inspect all boats for Quagga Mussels, so make sure you boat is clean and dry when you arrive or they may not let you launch.

LIABILITY WAIVER:  Each paddler is responsible for their own safety. It is the responsibility of each paddler to assess their own skill and physical conditioning, as well as making decisions what you will or not do. We are paddling buddies. not guides. PADDLING IS AT YOUR RISK

GregS, i see your picture, your messages n that your experienced. Please also email me to establish communications. DUDE, i recognize that pic, must be on Colorado River Right? I have a place at Hidden Shores and family member at Martinez lake. Would like to discuss best recommendation for river+ bay Kayak. Dont want to buy twice, or maybe I have to?

Hi James, yes, that photo was taken on a 3 day trip I did on the Colorado River, which was a 40 mile paddle from Walter's Camp to Fisher's Landing. I use a 17' x 23" wide Current Designs Sirocco sea kayak for bays, lakes and river trips. It works great for all three. I find that it has great handling characteristics for rough water and calm waters. It also has great storage capacity. I've done an 11 day trip on Lake powell and was able to carry all my supplies for the entire trip. Here are a couple of links that may help on choosing a kayak for your purposes. If your planning on doing multiday trips i would lean toward the longer kayak and if your just going to do day paddles spmething in the 14' range ought to work for you and it would be lighter and easier to lift and transport. http://www.rei.com/le... http://www.meetup.com...

Bill , I am new to this group. Going to buy a kayak. Given you have multiple kayaks AND the proper hauling rack/device AND that yer kind enough to offer your extra, would like to discuss my purchase of a rack and kayak with you . Is this possible please? Please email me thru meetup, and/or send email to exchange phone numbers. My email is. Pricha Zero One AT hotmail DOT com :). Actual name is Paul. Will only take 10 minutes of your time if you dont mind. Thank you.

Hey Paul, do I spell out "zero" and "one" or use the number "0" and "1"? I'll sell one of the kayaks (I can send you some photos), but not the racks for the car. :(

      October 12, 2013

    • Bill K.

Paul, you should have responded! I sold it last night. :(

I've tried to reach the concession at the number above about rentals but they did not answer and answering machine is off. Has anyone else had any luck? Would love to go but do need to rent-

    October 11, 2013

    • Bill K.

I can bring an extra boat: A 14' Necky Zoar sport.

      October 11, 2013

    • Bill K.

Twice I've offered to bring an extra boat for someone that was considering a rental, and not one word has been said in response. I'm about to go load my boat on the car, it looks like I'm not going to go to the trouble of loading the spare.

How can I find what the water temperature might be this time of year? Googled, found nothing.

    October 11, 2013

    • Greg S.

Hi Jacquie, I found this website that states as of October 6 that the water tempreture waas 79 degrees. Sounds a little high to me, but it's all I could find. http://www.sandiego.g...

    Hi everybody
Looks like we're going have a great turnout at all levels, after the paddle I thought we'd have lunch at Hernandos hideaway. There's been some questions about the directions on where to go take Lake Drive down to Del Dios Park which is on the North Shore and follow it to the ramp, drive down to the beach and launch your kayak. We will paddle at 9 o'clock and head east this time.

    1 · October 8, 2013

    • Marie

Hi Tim...I paddle the lake pretty often and going east will put us in XTREMELY shallow water pretty quickly....you might want to rethink this if you want a good workout.

  • Marie

    L. Hodges has a pretty decent area to picnic and since we're so many why not plan to get together afterwards instead of just disbursing to our cars. I'm new to the group and I'd enjoy meeting everyone.
    What say, Tim?

  • Greg S.

I'm so confused on why this Lake Hodges paddle is so unpopular...lol :) 28 attending so far...WOW! Either they love Tim the event host or they just love this lake for paddling. I'm guessing it's the latter...just kidding Tim...LOL ;-)

I know, right? I've been a bad kayaker, looking forward to Saturday:)

You know what they say about bad kayakers...whoops, I think the quote I was thinking of goes with some other kind of bad person...Lol ;-) I'm looking forward to the Saturday paddle too.

I have an extra kayak (plus paddle, skirt, and PFD), and the ability to transport it to Hodges if someone wants to try it out. It's a 14' Necky sit-inside.

    October 6, 2013

  • Jacquie

Chris, I have done 4 hours on Hodges and don't think it was miles and miles. I will hang with you. Looking forward:))

    October 4, 2013

  • Chris S.

My husband and I have a sit on top tandem kayak and would like to join you. Probably won't be able to make the entire 5mi (beginners, seniors) but sure would like to try. Would that be a problem?

CC and Dawn you might want to check out this conversation that was on the discussion board about rental kayaks and buying. Here is a link to the conversation. Hope it helps. http://www.meetup.com/San-Diego-Kayakers/messages/boards/thread/37500952

Dawn. I am with you on this too...I am needing direction on what others in the group think would be a good setup.

    September 4, 2013

  • Dawn B.

I'm looking at getting a kayak since most of your outings don't have access to rentals. Which is better a sit in or a sit on top? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
