La Jolla to Torrey Pines (Intermediate skill level, 10 - 15 miles)

La Jolla to Torrey Pines

The planned route : 17.5 miles - 5h15m00s (includes a 30m stop at the mushroom house)

Distance : 15 to 17 miles

Time :  5 to 6 hours

Meet up time : 9AM

Launch time : 9:15AM

This paddle is for folks with boats that can cover long distance with minimal effort. Please bring boats that are longer than 14 feet. Sit-On-Top rental kayaks will not be sufficient and will get left behind, a scenario we don't want' in this paddle

A feature of this paddle :[masked]

With the end of the Torrey Pines cliffs clearly visible from La Jolla, feel free to give it all and self-time your speed and endurance on that roughly 5.5-mile stretch of water. Don't knock yourself out , though, since you will still have a 6-mile paddle to get back to La Jolla once you reach Torrey Pines. I will sweep with a camera :)

Please post below in comment section if you have questions

This paddle is also posted on Socal Sea Kayak Club

More pictures from the paddle on 3/21/2010 :

For reference, here is a short version of this paddle :[masked] 10.9 miles - 3h4m6s

For those who are interested in the short version of this paddle or just a paddle under 10 miles in La Jolla where the length or the type of the kayak is not an issue, please leave a message in the comment section below. We will arrange for such a paddle if there's enough interest.

We did not go out far enough into the kelp beds to make this paddle longer than 15 miles as I had hoped but this is just as well. Throughout the paddle, I felt unbalanced and had to pay more attention than usual to stay upright. I blame this on not in shape and not enough regular paddle. I can work on getting in better shape but regular paddle sessions will have to wait. This paddle also told me I am not in paddling shape to do the 'Oceanside to La Jolla' paddle so I will shelve that for now. No problem getting out. How I did, coming in ? Crash and burn without fighting back. Will take a more serious look at those youtube surf launching and landing videos before going out next time out of respect for my paddle mates :) Thanks to Dave for the ride and both Dave and Jerry for the company out there.

I signed up before I read all the details. I would definitely be in for a much much shorter paddle, on an easy sit on top. If I should give up my RSVP just let me know. I'd be renting the kayak as well.

Nancy, what Lee has planned here is not a casual kayaking over to the caves and back type of paddle. If you're a beginner, the shortened version might still be a little bit of a workout.

Ok, thanks. I was just excited at a weekend outing that I could make! I'll look forward to another, easier event and try and get out there in the meantime.

I definitely need to retake English 101 at Mesa College this Summer to improve my chance of getting my points across clearly in writing these meetup proposals :)
