Friday Night Paddle 11/9 (No Rentals Available)

Friday night paddle; come join us for evening paddle in San Diego Bay. We will launch at Spanish Landing Park Beach, (see map) and we will paddle into main bay and head east toward downtown and Maritime Museum and the USS Midway and then head back to Spanish landing. We will try and be in the water at 5:00 p.m. Along with your normal safety gear you will need to bring a flashlight, headlamp or boat light, it is required by the Coast Guard to be used if need be to signal other craft if there appears a collision may be possible. The weather forecast as of 8:00am, 11/9 it is a 30% to 78% chance of rain between 5-8 pm, so you may want to bring a light rain jacket that you can paddle in if getting soaked is a concern. Wind is forecast between the same hours at 11-13 mph and there may be gusts of 20-24 mph. Temperatures are forecast to be 59-62 so dress appropriately. We will paddle at about a 3+ mph pace and the paddle will probably be between 7 & 8 miles and 2 to 3 hours maybe.

Awesome paddle. I enjoyed paddling in the rain. Wind was light.

If your bringing a tow rope I'll just leave my paddle at home...whoopee. I can drink beers while you tow me around the bay, LOL. Hey I've been checking the forecast off and on today and the forecast for tomorrow night is the following: Weather channel - Friday 5-8 pm, 30-40% rain, 11-12 mph WNW wind, 60-62 degrees. NOAA has - 5-8 pm, 90% rain, 13 mph W wind, 60-61 degrees. You guys still want to go? I guess we can still meet down there and if it looks to nasty we can always go grab a drink somewhere instead.

I've got the time slot open may as well meet up and if it's a no go then I can listen to you and Scott talk about how much fun you're going to have paddling around lake Powel next week, payback is a ...

I got a tow rope, I'm thinking that even if the weather is not optimal maybe we can put in for a little and I can practice towing? I'm sure Scott will like that. :)

Well due to potential inclement weather, I have the day free. Paint and concrete apparently don't mix with rain.

It sounds like fun, but I think the rain could be a problem. Also if you start a little later, like 6:30, it would be a better time frame for me.

Hi Cheryl, a 6:30 start doesn't work for me. I need to get home before 9:00 and starting at 6:30 will cut it too close for me. Sorry.

I'll try to be there at 5. Depends on when I finish the wall. Will call Jim and let him know by 4pm.

Sounds good, Scott. If your running a little late no problem we can wait a bit, we're used to that :) LOL. We're still not sure this paddle will happen or not. The 10% rain forecast shouldn't be a problem but the wind forecast for Friday is 17 mph during the day and 12 mph in the evening, so it might not be that great of a night to paddle. The only positive is it is a NW wind so paddling on the south side of Harbor Island and down in the northeast end of the bay could shelter us partly from the wind and wind waves. Lets wait until Thursday and Friday to see if the forecast worsens or gets better. The rain % forecast has already lessened since Saturday, so hopefully the wind forecast will go down as well.

Greg did you see the wind forcast?

    November 4, 2012

    • Greg S.

I didn't notice what it was yesterday, but I see it will be 16mph during the day and dropping to 11mph during the night. I'm ok with 11mph. Since yesterday the rain forecast has changed from 40% to 10% during the day and 10% to 20% during the night, so who knows what the rain and wind will be by next Friday with the inconsistance forecasts we get here in the San Diego area. Let's keep an eye on it and decide what we want to do on Friday. If it's blowing too much we can cancel and wait for a better night.

Is there anyone in the group who has a tandem kayak and willing to have a partner?

    November 3, 2012

    • Jim C.

      Sorry I don't have a tandem.

      November 4, 2012

    • Greg S.

Hi kay, I do have a tandem, but it has an issue with the rudder so it isn't usable right now so I'm using my single for this outing. Sorry.

Hey Jim, thanks for adding the close up photo of the beach there, since I beleive there are a few different entrances to the park.
