Car Camp and paddle at Picacho SRA

After another paddle that I took vacation time for fell through, I've decided to drive out to Picacho SRA http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=641 and camp out and paddle. If you're interested in meeting up out there reply and we'll talk, about it.

Cool Photos Jim. What was the camping area like at Taylor lake? Did they have fire rings, picnic tables, restroom or out houses and were you able to camp right near the water? Was there anyone else there? How was the dirt road on the way in. Do you think a regular car would be ok on that road? Good to hear you could paddle up the river, I was very curiuos about that. Thanks!

Only four sites, couple of picnic tables with shelter, nice new pit toilets, very close to the water, no running water no showers. Regular car should be ok but I wouldn't take anything real low on it, some washboard. I was alone, but of course it was thursday and friday night.

MAN! That was quite a trip, too cold, too windy, but really beautiful!

Went out one day, paddled about six miles, went up river against the wind and the current, at times I was only going 1.5 miles an hour on the way back I was coasting at 4. Crazy and fun.

Ok bye, I'll see ya all out there...oh wait I'm the only one who signed up. Darn I've met myself before. Oh well, I'll probably be camping at the Taylor Lake campground just in case anyone wants to show up. I've got an old Suzuki Sidekick dark green almost black, and a big REI tent, and a pink kayak which will probably be down on the water.

Hey Jim, sounds like a great place to camp and paddle this time of year. I've paddled that part of the river and stopped at the Picacho campground and did a short stop there once to check it out. My impressions was it is a nice campground but unfortunately the campsites are not right on the river. Please take plenty of photos of the area and if you get time please check out the camp sites at Taylor Lake just north of there. See the park map to get there. It appears to be about a few miles drive from Picacho SP. I've always thought Taylor Lake would be a good camp area and a great paddling area since it is out of the river current. Unfortunately I won't be able to meet you out there so please be my eyes and give us some trip photos when you get back.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Cool, ya I always thought that might be a good place to camp with a kayak, because you can paddle in the backwaters there if the river current is to swift to paddle upstream. You sure wouldn't want to get out in the channel and get pushed downstream and not be able to get back to the opening to the lake. I paddled once from Walter's Camp to Fisher's Landing and I can't remember how hard it would have been to paddle upstream or if it is at all possible in the Picacho area.

It better be possible, that lake is only about a mile long! :)

I plan on heading out Thursday morning early and staying Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights heading back Sun. It's going to be chilly at night so warm clothing lots of water all that. I've never been there before but it sounds really great if you like to paddle and like the desert.
