July 2014 Book Club Meeting - The News Media

Our next meetup – and Neil’s last before he leaves us to become a professor of polysci back east! – will be Saturday, July 26, at 2:30pm at our usual spot.  The subject will be our poor, sad news media, both the right-wing and mainstream versions.  We’re assigning two books, of which you should be sure to read one, and a couple of great articles - TBD – on the core problems today's news media faces and its uncertain future.

 1.  The Fox Effect, by David Brock of Media Matters, 2012, 330pp, paper:
-- The SD library has 4 copies.

2.  The Obama Hate Machine, by Bill Press, [masked]pp Hardback:
--  This covers the entire right-wing media machine, focusing on its bizarre loathing of this President.
--  Library 3 copies.

3.  Two-three very good essays from journalism experts on bias in the Media and news/political journalism's future.
-- To be posted on this site in a week at most.

Check this space in a week for the articles and let’s all turn out on 7/26 to give Neil a proper thank you for founding this book club and a proper send off.

Sorry I can't make it especially since it's Neil's last meeting. Thank you, Neil, for co-leading the group. We will miss you. Good luck.

For Neil’s last meeting, along with his FREE coffee and pastry, here are summaries/reviews of our 2 books. Also, since they cover the right-wing media machine, I thought you’d like something on the shortcomings of the mainstream media and the way its flaws play into Fox's hands.

    Book reviews:

3 pieces on the mainstream media

-- The devastatingly harmful “view from nowhere:”

-- Why the range of opinions expressed is are so narrow:

-- True Enough: The Second Age of PR:

Remember: We start at 2:30 - NOT 2pm.

I Just got the books and was going to power through them when I realized it's on Comic Con weekend so I won’t be able to make the meeting. :( oh well, I'll still read the books and be there in spirit. Someone say something about the Medias representation of LGBT issues and activism for me, please. :)

David Brock is awesome. And is in that Category of what I would call...A True Truth Teller. More informed and engaged journalist and writers like himself and his team. Are what those who believe in a Democracy...truly need. A media that tells us the Truth. And the Whole Truth. Not a media that feeds ANYTHING...but the truth !

And as for reading anything written by or listening to anything David Brooks. I would have to decline. He has been one of the KEY PLAYERS in pushing the Propaganda. And has been for many years. Huge reason why our Media is so toxic.

With the HATE Spewed @ our Potus on a daily basis. The Sunday News Shows CODDLING Propagandist. John Boehner and his Ilk allowed to hold constant press conferences and never be CHALLENGED. I say enough is enough. And that we must hold the Media, PAID Elected Officials who Participate in the HATE, and the FCC to a certain extent...ALL ACCOUNTABLE!
