Monthly Meeting: Economics, Austerity, and the Economic Recovery

Hi All,

For next month we'll be looking at economics and economic history, specifically the effect of government policy on economic outcomes. Given the upcoming election and the vastly different economic visions both parties have for this country, this week's readings will focus on what will happen if austerity measures do pass in the US and what economic policies can help this country out of the recession.

The two books will be The Return of Depression Economics by Paul Krugman (http://www.amazon.com/Return-Depression-Economics-Crisis-2008/dp/0393337804/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342388099&sr=8-1&keywords=return+of+depression+economics) and End This Depression Now also by Paul Krugman (http://www.amazon.com/End-This-Depression-Paul-Krugman/dp/0393088774/ref=la_B000APS32M_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342388260&sr=1-1).

It was quite fascinating to hear the opinions of "the other side". Both sides have good and bad points.

I always enjoy coming to this meeting. Like all the input from everyone. Don't know much about economics, but am always learning. :-)

Believe it or not, I got lost trying to find Pacific Beach earlier and by 2 PM knew I'd never make it to University section of town. I thought it was between Pt. Loma and Oceanside and spent the better part of 3 hours driving around. My GPS didn't know where Pacific Beach is, either. I can find my way anywhere in downtown San Diego, but beyond that, I am, obviously, lost. I'll make sure I don't have any errands before the meetup next time.

PB is north of Mission Beach and south of La Jolla. It is not marked well on roadway signs, so it is easy to get lost.

Please keep me in touch. Today was quite busy--computer came home from repair shop and Bunco meet up tonight (they need exactly 12 people for the games to work out). I enjoy our "like-minded' perspectives. AYSO soccer practices started 2 weeks ago, and driver's ed for my 17 y/o start Monday. I have time to read, but not always meet as much as I'd wish. Thanks Barb

"The Return of Depression Economics" by Krugman is an easy read and can be checked out at the library.

I'm hoping to be able to take transit to the meetup from Mission Valley...may be a long and complicasted endeavor...will see.

I was walking on the right side of the parade. I actually don't remember much about the people in the audience because I was handing out flyers and such. You'll be at this month's book discussion?

    July 25, 2012

  • NancY

It was completely ginormous! (if it's what I saw after the parade's end at the park)
I was walking with the out-or-the-closet atheists of SDNA.

  • NancY

Oh, yes! And walked in it, too!

I hope you don't really mean 2 AM. Is it 2 PM?
