Next Mtg: Topic and When to Meet

From: David G.
Sent on: Tuesday, November 26, 2013 5:11 PM

Hi all,

This email asks you to help decide what topic we should do for our next book club meeting, and when to meet. Please reply with (1) a topic preference, and (2) is January 4 OK with you. Below is a list of the topics we came up with for next month, and a few tentative book ideas from me just to give you an idea of what we might actually read.

Deciding:
After you all tell me which topics you like best, I’ll pick one and the1-2 books in consultation with Neil, using your preferences as a guide. Please keep in mind we have many months of topics in front of us, not just December, so any topic we don’t choose now can come later. Also, we’ll pick the books because juicy-sounding titles aren’t enough; we have to research their length, contents, availability, etc.

When and Where: How about meeting on January 4? Was the Panera OK? Bad parking but nice area. Any suggestions for somewhere else to meet?

THEMES

War on Terror (in general or a specific sub-issue) –

Criticism of GWOT, future of it:

· Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power. 500pp, but good overview of BO policies towards Al Qaeda, Af/Pak, Iran, Drones, etc.

Nature of religious extremism:

· The Battle for God: Explains origins and nature of Muslim, U.S. evangelical Christian, and Israeli Jewish fundamentalist extremism. A good read, but not specific to how we conduct the War on Terror.

· A book on radical Islamist political movements.

Drones and Assassinations:

· Dirty Wars: The World Is A Battlefield, by Jeremy Scahill. Sounds awesome, but 650pp!

Is war getting too easy for the U.S.?

· War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death, 2012, 300pp.

· The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War, by Bacevich, a brilliant book.

Organized Labor’s Future –

· Why Labor Matters. 2009, 200pp

· How to be for Labor when It’s Flat on its Back.
2004, 350pp.

· Uprising: The Story of Wisconsin [the revolt against governor Walker]. 2011.

Energy Future / Green or revolution

· The Power Surge: Energy, Opportunity, and the Battle for America's Future

· We‘ve done global warming.

Higher Education –

· University, Inc.: The Corporate Corruption of Higher Education.

· Something more general on the future of higher ed.

Death Penalty –

· Books on pros/cons, history of it, condemnation of it, legal history, etc.

History –

· How the Cold War started; e.g., The [Dulles] Brothers.

The Politics of Austerity – (a new idea from me. This is topic #1 in our politics for the next year or two!)

· The Age of Austerity: How Scarcity will Remake American Politics. An extremely important book IMO.

· We did austerity before, but not how zero sum politics will warp our politics.
