Rattlesnakes are a big problem here in San Diego County for dog owners. If you hike with your dog or live in a rural area, or near a canyon in a more developed part of town, there's a good chance that you and your dogs will have a run-in at some point. Several of the group's members have had the snakes in their backyards, and a couple have had their dogs bitten while out and about. The cost of treatment can easily run into the thousands.

While nothing is 100% effective, rattlesnake avoidance training has proven highly effective in preventing envenomation by rattlers. Using species endemic to an area, Eric Briggs of Natural Solutions trains your dog to recognize the sight, sound and scent of the snakes. By learning to avoid these sensory cues, your dog is taught to avoid the snakes. His methods are humane for both dog and snake, and an added bonus is that by paying attention to your dog's behavior, you can help avoid the snake as well.

While I used another trainer for Okie, Eric comes highly recommended by two of the group's members. I plan on putting Nessa through his training. Rhonda's experiences with him are described on this website http://offleash.meetu... and on Eric's http://socalrattlesna... . If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them on the message board, or to call Eric Briggs directly at [masked].

I've yet to establish a location for the training . More than likely, it will be held at a private home in Mira Mesa, but Jamul, Carlsbad, and a County park in the Chula Vista/Eastlake area are other possibilities. When you RSVP, please state your preference along with the number of dogs that will participate. I'll let everyone know for sure within the next week. I will also try and assign time slots. I'll contact you regarding your preferred time once I have a better idea of how many people will be coming.

*****A deposit of $25/dog is required upon RSVPing. You may either use the PayPal link below, or mail me the deposit. If you use PayPal, an additional $2 may be added to cover their fees. My mailing address is Nathan Trotter, 422 7th St, Imperial Beach, 91932******

The training went very well. Thanks to Teleri for hosting, Erick , Mike and AJ for the training, and Cynthia and Rhonda for recommending Erick's crew! I'll feel a bit more secure on the trails (though I won't let my guard down). Nessa, my chessie, responded very well. I was shown that baby rattlers can be guarded against. Since many people couldn't attend, and this is truly invaluable , I will be working on an August session, and photos to be posted soon.
    •  The trainers were great. I was pretty nervous about this before I got there, but they did a great job and I'm very glad I did it. It was also very nice to get to know some new people in the group and the brunch afterwards was a nice way to do that. Teleri, thanks again for inviting us into your home.
    •  Thanks Nathan ! I think this went very well. Eric, AJ, and Mike did an excellent job and exhibited appropriate individualized sensitivity to dog, owner and snake - quite a feat......not to mention a show. TL Thank you for providing the location. It was nice to have met you. Looking forward to meeting up on a trail next time!
    •  The trainer/handlers were sensitive to the individual canine temperaments. None were traumatized; all learned to avoid the snakes. And the participating humans were a great bunch.
