Dogs are very social beings that have evolved within a closely-knit family structure: the pack. Life in the pack meant for our dogs' ancestors to spend a lot of time migrating and moving about in a group. This represented one of the main activities during the day. This is why our dogs still get so excited when we make ready to take them out.
Today's pet dogs, however, grow up in a man-made environment and things for them are not the way they used to be. One of the main differences for them compared to their ancestors is that they often grow up without much social contact with other dogs, once they are past early puppy age. Quite commonly this results in problem behaviour when they meet strange dogs on the walk; for example, excessive barking, lunging, and jumping up. This can be embarassing for the owners, but can become also be dangerous if one of the dogs involved shows any form of aggression.
As many of you know, while I do promote off leash activities, I also think dogs should be able to walk politely on leash as well, as that is the law in most areas. The walk itself is approximately three miles. It's a flat, dirt trail. Very easy course that will be loaded with distractions. A great location for this type of training.
