This Silat Circle (halaqah) is established for the purpose of training Indonesian Silat, in an authentic Sumatran Form. Anyone interested in an ancient martial path set to tribal drum beats is encouraged to join and be introduced to the cultural treasure of Indonesia in a manner untainted by contemporary influences...Silat is designed through centuries to overcome other martial systems, its movement is unknown among the other traditional martial arts, it does not look like Kung Fu, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do etc. or any other blessed martial path, its dance is distinctly Sumatran, it is a mother art from whose root many other arts have derived. Its approach is aggressive as it presumes to combat multiple armed attackers from a grounded unarmed standpoint.
We are a circle of people dedicated to the practice of an ancient tribal musical martial art, if you love drums, or dance, if you are interested in the study of an ancient female self defense system founded by women for women (Bela Diri/Personal Shield), if you are intrigued by the mystical approach to a way of life centered in the heart, if you are called to a practice of physical expression based in traditions of martial fitness and exercise, or wish to learn a bladed weopons intensive art then Silat may be for you. We expect a high level of respect, good manners, and willingness to learn from those who are interested in joining our circle, we seek to cultivate a place for martial virtues to take root and prevail in the spirit of peace and reverance.
The Silat styles we train include but are not limited to; Harimau (Sumatran Tiger) Cimande (River/Flower art), Pukulan (striking percussion) Bela Diri (female personal shield), as well as several other animal systems: white egret (crane), Python, Menangkabau (water buffalo), Buayah (Crocodile)as well as the traditional silat weaponry: karambit/tiger claw blade, veil/sarong, tongkat/stick spear, pisau/knife, golok/machete, parang/short sword, kalimantin/sword... Clarit/sickle, and Kriss. Our Pusakah (spiritual inheritance) is from the sufi tariqah of the Uwaysi Kwahjagan Naqshbandi Haqqaniyya, and West Sumatran Silat Batak tribe.
