Ocean Ride at Borderfield State Park

Spend the night at Sweetwater Campground on Saturday and then travel about 15 minutes to the ocean on Sunday am.

Sunday staging area address:

2191 Hollister Street
San Diego, CA 92154
We are meeting at 9am. Rides leaves at 10am

We are riding toward the ocean in Border Field state park, nice grasslands. It's about one hour ride in, then we play in the water with our horseys.

Some riders are still planning to spend the night at sweetwater campground on Saturday.

I already live in bonita and my horse stays at sunnyside stock farm right there on the trail. If people are meeting up the night before I can drive over for the night and then just ride the trail from my barn the next day. Who is a good contact person to make sure I find everyone? since I'm new I wouldn't have a clue who to look for.

We are really bummed that we are unable to go due to not having a camp site.

      July 1

    • Peggy R.

We can stay at a ranch near the staging area. Let me know if you want to come and I will make the reservation you could also call or text me[masked]

I spoke to Bobbie at Wiggington Ranch. She can accommodate 4 horses only. So if Mariah, Tim, Michele and I wanted to stay on Sat we could leave the rigs there while we ride, the staging area is accros the street. She will only charge us $15 per night per horse. They will have a pen, a automatic water and we will have access to a portapotty. She has reserved it for us, please let me know if you want to do it and I will call her back to let her know for sure.
    Thank you Cherie

My horse is very green and has never done the beach ill try it out though and see how it goes, there's always a first for everything right?

one of my horses has never been either..but no worries the best way to experience it is with riders and horses who already have..so come with us!

      June 22, 2014

    • Cherie Y.

There is plenty of sand if your horse is afraid and doesn't want to touch the water.

I highly recommend bringing 2 cans of Off or a strong mosquito repellant. 1 for you, 1 for your horse. I have kept my horse very close to the staging area and the mosquitos can be overwhelming. It's a great ride and the ocean is beautiful.

    June 28, 2014

    • Cherie Y.

Fly spray does not keep mosquitos off your horse.

      June 28, 2014

    • Judy

thanks for the heads up, i knew to bring for both but did not know fly spray would not work! glad I saw this

this ride from staging are to ocean is about 1 to 1 1/2 hour which means 3 hours up and back plus what ever tome we spend playing in the surf itself

    June 26, 2014

  • Dana

How long of a ride will it be? probably should've asked that before accepting this one.

    June 26, 2014

  • Doug H.

Thanks Judy. Hollister is good. I rode it years ago. It is a nice ride to the beach as long as the TJ river is not running deep, which should not be a problem for us. How long do you see us out for?

    June 22, 2014

  • Doug H.

If we are just coming Sunday where do we meet at Bofderfield? What is the address? Doug

    June 17, 2014

    • Judy

there is more than one staging area so let me investigate and then i will let you all know

      June 18, 2014

    • Judy

hope you saw that I posted it Hollister staging area, will be about an hour or bit more ride to the beach from there

I have site 28, and now that you shared some of your skills I am thinking we should have a saturday night potluck.........

      June 22, 2014

  • Doug H.

Dana, The beach is not that scary. There are a lot of options other than riding in the water. Still want to know what staging area we are meeting at though.

    June 21, 2014

    • Judy

ok we are going to meet at 2310 Hollister, its about an hour ride to the beach from there, although we could stage closer I was told today that the ride from there through the grasslands is very nice..bring fly spray for the horse and bug spray for yourself, I think we should meet by 10 am

It's an ideal situation to have a water saddle or saddle pad rather than riding in your leather saddle as the salt water can damage leather.
