"and leave everything else to ... the people.” Precisely. "The states" are just miniature versions of larger governments; whatever they provide can be done quite nicely without threatening people with imprisonment or worse. If people would want something enough to vote for it, they would be willing to just pay for it directly and cut out the 'middle man'.

"eliminate all the unnecessary departments and regulations" ... That would be ALL of them. The only valid "regulations" that could exist would be market based ones arrived at by customers making choices and free enterprises filling those needs that Americans wish to support with their hard earned money.

The problem with the federal government is that it CANNOT be limited to the "enumerated Constitutional powers"; once you grant others power OVER YOU (IRS anyone?) you are now a SLAVE. That's how they treat us if we have the temerity to DISOBEY.

“The only way that governments can increase personal liberty is by retracting - getting out of our lives."

Great! That's what I want and it would lead to a prosperity boom once all those resources were no longer being sucked into the bottomless pit of bureaucracy, often to be used against us.

I'm all about the individual liberty. All of the evils of the world are a result of denying to others their natural liberty. If you respect others, they are likely to respect you. Just don't see how governments, the existence of which is dependent upon disrespect (obey us or suffer!), can do anything to increase individual liberty.
