SQL Server 2014 xVelocity Enhancement: Updateable Columnstore Indexes

  • Nov 7, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • Microsoft Office

Speaker Pat Sheehan, Data Platform Architect, Microsoft

Pat will offer an overview of the xVelocity engine enhancements for columnar data and review columnstore –v- rowstore.  You'll learn how and when to apply columnstore indexes, and see the radical improvement that columnstore can provide. Pat will demo a Data Warehouse system being optimized using Columnstore Indexing.

You'll learn:

• Where columnstore indexes are best suited, and, just as importantly, scenarios where they are not suited

• How and why columnstore may provide orders of magnitude performance increase for your DW systems

• How to create columnstore indexes

And according to Pat, the #1 reason to create columnstore indexes is...."All the cool kids are doing it"!

Pat Sheehan recently joined the Microsoft Silicon Valley Technology Center (SVC MTC) as Data Platform Architect. Prior to that, he was with Microsoft Consulting Services (MCS) as an engineer, architect, and enterprise strategist, specializing in SQL Server, Business Intelligence, and Enterprise/Solutions Architecture.
