Marin Headlands: The Kirby Cove Loop

Hello All,

The Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area offer a diverse combination of lovely beaches, spectacular views of the coast and San Francisco, and a window into the area's history. On this hike we will sample several of the highlights and stunning views of the Marin Headlands, including Rodeo Beach, the Point Bonita Lighthouse, and Kirby Cove.

With a hike length of 12 miles and a total elevation gain of 1750 feet, our hike will be slightly beyond our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):
8:15 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave., Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

8:45 AM: Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot, Redwood City: NORTH PENINSULA CARPOOL POINT.

9:30 AM: Southwest corner of Anza St.& Funston Ave, San Francisco:  SAN FRANCISCO CARPOOL POINT

Recreation Area. *STARTING POINT OF HIKE *

5:00-5:30 PM: Back at starting point. ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

* Optional special dinner in the area after the hike.

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. The parking lot at our destination has limited capacity so carpooling is especially important for this hike. Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto, North Peninsula, or San Francisco is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

* FURTHER DETAILS POSTED BELOW*

I hope you can join us....

Julio M.

CARPOOLING:
1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Since the parking lots near Rodeo Beach are of limited capacity, carpooling is especially important for this hike

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
The Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area offer a diverse combination of lovely beaches, spectacular views of the coast and San Francisco, and a window into the area's history. On this hike we will sample several of the highlights and stunning views of the Marin Headlands, including Rodeo Beach, the Point Bonita Lighthouse, and Kirby Cove.

Our route will begin at Rodeo Beach and take us along a route to the Point Bonita Lighthouse that offers lovely panoramic views of the coast and ends with an opportunity to take in this important historic and currently operating lighthouse guiding ships through the Golden Gate. We will then take-in the stunning views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate as we hike along Conzelman Road to Hawk Hill and the lovely Kirby Cove.

Great day ... w/ inspiring, expansive views of the ocean, beaches & the bay - and nearby hills, valleys and distant mountain ranges. Met a gorgeous creature on the hike ... see photo I posted ;-)

Fantastic views of GG Bridge and the City early in the day. I'm 58 and just starting on long hikes after not doing them for a while. This was hard, but I made it about 8 of 12 miles. Yay Me! Lots of up and down, but at sea level you recover fast.

Folks from Fremont and nearby areas: here's a good carpool spot off 880 @ Stevenson. G Map - http://tinyurl.com/cn4vyxo About 1h 15m from there, so how about meeting at 8:25am at the corner of Omar and Hutton (as shown in the map pic view). Post a comment here or msg me if you want to join.

Bunker-Barry Tunnel is closed for repairs so the above instructions and that giving my navigation aids won't quite work. All motor vehicles must use Conzelman Road to enter and exit the Headlands as shown in this map: http://www.projectheadlands.gov...

    8) From exit 442: 243 ft
    9) Turn left onto Alexander Ave 0.2 mi
    10) Take the 1st right onto Conzelman Rd 0.2 mi
11). At the traffic circle, take the 1st exit onto McCullough Rd 1.2 mi
    12) Turn left onto Bunker Rd 0.9 mi
    24) Continue onto Mitchell Rd 1.8 mi
