Point Reyes National Seashore: Mt. Wittenberg- Sky Trail- Sculptured Beach Hike

WEATHER NOTE POSTED FRIDAY JUNE 28 at 5:30 PM:

As most or all of you know, the weather forecast for Saturday predicts unusually hot weather for the Bay Area and beyond. Our hike at Point Reyes National Seashore is close to the coast and temperatures are forecast to be more moderate there. In addition, the portion of the hike that is not immediately next to the ocean will mostly be in the shade. Therefore, we *will* go forward with the hike.

The National Weather Service is predicting 70-75 deg. F peak temperatures at the Point Reyes coast tomorrow. However, Weather.com is predicting temperatures as high as 90 deg. F in the Point Reyes area (not clear if this applies to the coast as the NWS forecast does)!

As a precaution, please make sure you take at least two liters of water/ extra water. In addition, if temperatures do get above 80 deg. F and become uncomfortable, I will modify the hike in three ways:

i. We will go more slowly

ii. We will spend more time at the beach, and

iii.  We will cut the hike short and instead go sip some nice potent potables or other beverages at a local establishment.

If you have any concerns about your physical ability to complete the hike given this weather forecast, it is probably prudent to not go on this hike and you should modify your RSVP.

That being said... I hope you can join us for this adventure....

Your Organizer,
Julio M.

Hello All,

From its thunderous ocean breakers crashing against rocky headlands and expansive sand beaches to its open grasslands, brushy hillsides, and forested ridges, Point Reyes offers a rich diversity of memorable hikes and natural beauty. Our loop hike will allow us to sample the full range of this natural beauty and spectacular views, and the proximity to the Pacific will keep us cool on a summer day.

With a hike length of 12.7 miles and 2600 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be somewhat tougher than our usual intermediate level. However, the stunning natural beauty revealed by this hike is worth the extra effort. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike at a tougher level than we usually do. *More details are listed below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):
8:00 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave.,
Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

8:30 AM: Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot, Redwood City:

10:45 AM: Bear Valley Visitor Center Area, Point Reyes National Seashore
*STARTING POINT OF HIKE *

6:00 PM: Back at starting point. ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

* Optional dinner in the Point Reyes area after the hike.

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. The parking lot at our destination has limited capacity so carpooling in full or nearly full cars is especially important for this hike. Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto, North Peninsula, or San Francisco is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

CARPOOLING:
1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Since the parking lots at the Bear Valley Visitor Center are of limited capacity, carpooling in full or nearly full cars is especially important for this hike

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

The hike organizer will make sure the carpool he is in  briefly stops at this location to help organize the carpools.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
From its thunderous ocean breakers crashing against rocky headlands and expansive sand beaches to its open grasslands, brushy hillsides, and forested ridges, Point Reyes offers a rich diversity of memorable hikes and natural beauty. Our loop hike will allow us to sample the full range of this natural beauty and spectacular views, and the proximity to the Pacific will keep us cool on a summer day.

From our meeting point we will walk over to the Bear Valley Trail/ Mount Wittenberg trailhead and follow the Bear Valley Trail for a short distance until the beginning of the Mount Wittenberg Trail. This trail provides a route through deep forest, a climb with a steady grade, and then magnificent lookouts of Drakes Bay and other areas. Mount Wittenberg is the highest point in the park.

Next we will join the Sky Trail which is known for its top-rated stunning panoramic views. The Sky Trail will take us down to Sculptured Beach via Fire Lane Trail and the Coastal Trail. We will return by following the Woodward Valley Trail, Sky Trail, Meadow Trail, and Bear Valley Trail.
* OPTIONAL DINNER IN THE AREA after the hike.

Tough hike, hot (actually warm + humid) day, amazing trails and views. i.e. exactly as described. Plus a good crowd, and the usual painstaking + thoughtful organizing / herding of a large group. So, 5 Stars!
