Stern Grove- Free Pink Martini Concert & Optional Short Hike

  • August 11, 2013 · 10:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hello All,

The free summer concerts on Sundays at Stern Grove in San Francisco are, in my opinion, one of the great simple and quintessential pleasures of living in the Bay Area. On Sunday August 11, Pink Martini brings its wonderful “nouveau big band” sound to the meadow at Stern Grove, and Los Angeles-based group La Santa Cecilia opens the show with an alternative spin on traditional Latin rhythms.

There will also be an optional short hike before the concert.

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):

9:00 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave., Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

9:30 AM: Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot, Redwood City: NORTH PENINSULA CARPOOL POINT.

10:15 AM: Entrance to Stern Grove at 19th Ave. and Sloat Blvd. *SF MEETING POINT *

4:30 PM: End of concert. ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

NOTES:

1. EARLY-BIRD ASSISTANCE: Since these concerts are popular, having one or two people who live in SF arrive at 9:30 AM to help guarantee an area for our group would be very helpful. If you are willing to take on this roll, please send me an e-mail.

2. GUARANTEEING A SPOT: *Concert starts at 2 PM but early arrival is needed to get a good spot on the meadow for a picnic and listening. Only those meeting us at 10:15 AM will be guaranteed a spot with our group.

3. PICNIC ITEMS. Please bring food or drink to share, and picnic supplies such as a ground cover and/or plates and cups would be much appreciated!

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking around Stern Grove (and to minimize our carbon footprint). Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto or North Peninsula is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

*More details are listed below*

I hope you can join us....

Julio M.

CARPOOLING:

1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking around Stern Grove (and to minimize our carbon footprint).

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

EVENT DESCRIPTION: The free summer concerts on Sundays at Stern Grove in San Francisco are, in my opinion, one of the great simple and quintessential pleasures of living in the Bay Area. On Sunday August 11, Pink Martini will bring its “nouveau big band” sound to the meadow at Stern Grove, and Los Angeles-based group La Santa Cecilia opens the show with an alternative spin on traditional Latin rhythms. This outing will mainly consist of a relaxed group picnic on the meadow at Stern Grove, sharing the meadow with other wonderful folks enjoying a fine meal and a relaxed time.

The summer concerts at Stern Grove are extremely popular so an early arrival at 10:15 AM (or earlier) is essential for a good spot on the meadow. Besides, after setting up a picnic area on the meadow, some of us can take an optional short hike of about 3 miles length. Destination will be decided based on the amount of fog and amount of time remaining after set-up of our picnic area.

Yes, it was a great show! It was very impressive for they sang in different languages like Turkish, Japanese, French, Croatian and English. And some band members sang lead. Very cool! Great meeting you. See you at the next Stern Grove Festival. :-)

There's a chance I'm coming from the East Bay,with a few friends,so I'm not sure if I could save a spot. But I recommend getting there as early as possible, before 9:30am, if you want a good place picnic place for a large group.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
