San Francisco/ Crissy Field- Sausalito- SF/ Mission Bay Hike

Hello All,

The walk along the north shore of San Francisco to the Golden Gate Bridge is arguably one of the most beautiful urban hikes in the U.S. if not the world. Spectacular views of San Francisco Bay, the Marin Headlands, the city of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, or the Pacific Ocean are evident at almost every turn as one walks along the shore of San Francisco Bay.

We will walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and then join the Bay Trail to the recently converted Fort Baker with its lovely views of the Bay and SF and wonderful restoration. We will then hike into downtown Sausalito and then take a ferry boat back to SF. We will then hike along the shore of SF Bay along the Embarcadero to the Mission Bay and Dogpatch, exploring this developing area of SF. We will return to our starting point on Muni.

This hike is 9.5 miles long with very little elevation gain, so this hike rates as a moderate hike. Details are included below.

I hope you can make it on this hike in May when SF has some of its best weather!

We will begin our hike at Crissy Field and head westward to the Golden Gate Bridge. Our hike will then take us over the Golden Gate Bridge and provide us with a unique opportunity to walk under the northern section of the deck of the bridge as we head toward the Bay Trail. We will follow the Bay Trail under the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Baker. We will explore this last fort in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to be converted to a park facility, including the lovely Cavallo Point lodge. We will then follow the Bay Trail into Sausalito and walk along Bridgeway, which will allow us to hug the bay shore and explore downtown Sausalito. The Sausalito-San Francisco ferry will then transport us back to the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street in San Francisco, allowing us to survey the route of our walk and enjoy great views as we cruise through the Bay. We will spend some time at the historic Ferry Building to see its indoor atrium marketplace, the views, and enjoy its unique charm. Our hike will continue along the Embarcadero’s Herb Caen Way to South Beach and the secluded walk next to Mission Creek and next to AT&T Park. We will then cross the historic Third Street drawbridge and walk over to the relatively new Mission Bay neighborhood and UCSF’s Mission Bay Campus. Time permitting, our walk will continue over to the emerging Dog Patch neighborhood. We will bring our walk to an end by taking the T-Line Muni metro to the Caltrain Station where we can catch Muni Bus 41 or 45 to return us close to our starting point. The bus will take us through the Union Square area, Chinatown and back to the western edge of the Marina District--- near our starting point and at the end of the bus line. We will then walk westward along the waterfront with its great views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge as we head back to our starting point.

DIRECTIONS to Crissy Field from Palo Alto : - Take the I-280 NORTH ramp towards SAN FRANCISCO
- Take 19th AVENUE EXIT from I-280 in SF (only possibility is northward)
- Stay on 19th AVENUE going north
- When you reach Golden Gate Park, 19th AVENUE transitions to PARK-
PRESIDIO AVENUE (to make sure you make this transition correctly, get in
the rightmost lane after you arrive at Golden Gate Park)
- Continue northward on PARK-PRESIDIO
- After passing through a tunnel, watch out for the DOWNTOWN/
MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which you should take (first exit after tunnel)
- You will then be on Doyle Drive. Go to the leftmost lane and take the
MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which will put you on MARINA BLVD heading
EAST.
- Your next goal is to arrange to travel WEST on MARINA BLVD. (Try either
making a right turn onto a sidestreet and then looping back to Marina Blvd or
make a left turn into one of the parking lots on Marina Green and then loop
back to Marina Blvd)
- When you are HEADING WEST on MARINA BLVD, you will encounter a
stoplight where you can veer right to get off Marina Blvd and
head into the Presidio/ Crissy Field.
- You are now on MASON STREET and the CRISSY FIELD CENTER will be
to your left (at the corner with HALLECK STREET). Trip "leader":
