San Francisco: East to West Hike

Hello All,

We will explore the City from East to West with visits to several parks and opportunities for some lovely vistas along the way. We will hike westward from near the Caltrain station where we will see the waters of San Francisco Bay all the way to Ocean Beach lapped by the waters of the Pacific.

With a hike length of 10 miles and 1500 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be at our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

**There will be an optional dinner in SF after the hike.

NOTES ABOUT TRANSPORTATION:

1. We will be taking Caltrain to the hike starting point.

2. If you are in the East Bay, BART would have been an excellent option, but the BART STRIKE PREVENTS THIS OPTION. For those in the southeast part of the Bay Area, driving across the Dumbarton Bridge or San Mateo Bridge to a Caltrain station might be worth considering.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not served by Caltrain or BART, please see detailed comments about carpooling below before seeking carpools.

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES & MEETING LOCATIONS (details below):

9:10 AM: Meet at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, PALO ALTO

9:27 AM: CALTRAIN Northbound train DEPARTS California Ave. Caltrain station.

NOTE: You can board Caltrain at other stops and join the group leaving from Palo Alto (see details below).

11:15 AM: Meet at Mission Creek Park near intersection of 4th Street and Channel Street in SAN FRANCISCO (HIKE STARTING POINT).

6:15 PM: Estimated time back at Caltrain Station in SF

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

* FURTHER DETAILS POSTED BELOW*

I hope you can join us....

San Francisco: East to West Hike, October 19, 2013 - Sat

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESTINATION: San Francisco: East to West Hike

DATE: October 19, 2013 (Saturday)

TOTAL LENGTH OF HIKE: 10 miles

TOTAL ELEVATION GAIN: 1500 feet

TRANSPORTATION:
1. WE WILL BE TAKING CALTRAIN FROM CALIFORNIA AVENUE STATION, PALO ALTO. I encourage people on the Peninsula and in the South Bay to take Caltrain since the hike starting point is close to the Caltrain station in San Francisco (and of course you don't have to worry about finding parking or driving in SF and can socialize along the way).

NOTE: If you would like to board the train at one of the stops other than the California Ave. station in Palo Alto and join the group on the train, we will try to be in the third car back from the north end of the train. If the cars are the grey and red cars, we will be upstairs. Otherwise, if the cars are silver, we will be downstairs. If you can’t find us, call Julio M (contact information below) to meet up with us on the train. We will be on Caltrain #425.

2. FROM THE EAST BAY TAKING BART would have been an excellent option, but the BART STRIKE PREVENTS THIS OPTION. For those in the southeast part of the Bay Area, driving across the Dumbarton Bridge or San Mateo Bridge to a Caltrain station might be worth considering.

3. CARPOOLING: If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

COST: Caltrain roundtrip ticket ($14 for Palo Alto to SF) + Muni Metro ($2.00) to return to Caltrain station. NOTE: The hike organizer will ask for a voluntary donation (suggested amount 5 dollars) at the end of the hike to help support the Meetup group.

ORGANIZER: Julio M.(contact info at end of description)

RAIN CANCELS.... In case of doubt, call my cell phone # (listed below) after 9 PM on the night before the hike. I will leave an outgoing message with any notices about hike cancellation due to weather.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

We will explore the City from East to West with visits to several parks and opportunities for some lovely vistas along the way. We will hike westward from near the Caltrain station where we will see the waters of San Francisco Bay all the way to Ocean Beach lapped by the waters of the Pacific.

From Mission Creek Park we will hike along Mission Creek over to Franklin Square and the Mission District. Our hike will then take us to lively and lovely Dolores Park at which we will start our climb toward Tank Hill, which offers lovely panoramic views.

From Tank Hill, our route will take us to some of the trails of the Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve and up and over to Golden Gate Heights. We will next explore and appreciate the views from a series of nearby parks starting with Golden Gate Heights Park, Rocky Outcrop Park, Grand View Park, and finally 15th Ave. Steps Park. We will then hike down Kirkham Street to Ocean Beach and lovely views of the Pacific.

A short walk on Ocean Beach takes us to the terminus of the N-Judah Muni Metro Line, which will take us directly to the Caltrain station. Most of the N-Judah trains go all the way to the other end of the line at the Caltrain Station. Check for “Caltrain Station” marked on the front of the train.

OPTIONAL DINNER in SF after the hike.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
